    Default Gwen 12

    Hi All,
I'm interested in restoring a Gwen 12 sailing dinghy. I sailed one in the 60s and early 70s. Any information as to plans, available boats and/or gear, would le appreciated

My uncle had one back when, but I've found very little on them recently...Good luck!

Do you actually have one? Or are you looking for one to do up?

Now the obviously silly question - have you done a google search to see what's available in the way of plans/etc?

No, I'm not going to ask 'why', there's an obvious emotional link

Pete (Still Smilin') did Janlyn II up to sell her before he moved to Hobart.

I've always had a soft spot for Gwens and Janlyn II was in the family for 20+ years. I found a kindly person to take her off my hands and I spent a good deal of time and effort and $ to hand her over in good condition. I now sail a Sabre off ond on which is about as close to the Gwen shape as you can get. It's a wonder that so many of these have dissappeared. I hope nobody unearths one in Tassie - I don't want the temptation.

Here's some pics I took about 10-12 mths ago down at he Margate Train south of Hobart. While I was deliberating on her she got sold (thank goodness). Very poor condition but complete with life jackets and trapese harness - and salt from the last sail, and a set of plans!!!. A large hole seemed to indicate the reason for sale???? The veneered deck would have been beautiful in her time. #624 would place her at about 1961-62 I'd guess. So someone in or around Margate has a Gwen. How do we find out who?? Her name was "Rusty".

I've also just finished reading the new book about Iain Oughtred - A Life in Wooden Boats. Iain started sailing Gwens on Sydney Harbour and he has a few nice words to say about them as well as some good pics.

Graeme has also emailed me knowing #624 as Crescendo and sailing on the Tamar. Do either of you recognise the veneered deck? ie:the sail may have ended up with Rusty".

Hi, I have never seen the boat I am only going of the written information I have. What I have dos'nt list a boat Rusty. Maybe the name was changed, I would not think that if the sail had been sold or given away that the new owners would use the same number at least not while competeing in any events.
