Hartley Vixen
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for a Hartley Vixen 17' in timber or GRP. This hull is one of the best small offshore designs in regard to sea handling ever.In the 1980's I clocked hundreds of hours off the far south coast of South Australia in a centre console model and always felt confident even in a number of blows we were caught in.Any info greatly appreciated. Also I have just completed building a Doug Hylan designed Peapod 13' in glued clinker. The molds and building frame are available for purchase and I will give away the plans and advice to purchaser. Sorry about the location-Darwin Australia.I'd post a few pics but am still finding my way around the website.
Cheers

Howdy Hendo and welcome!
I have moved this to the general area. Be aware that advertisements of items for sale are usually frowned on by the moderatorss of the forum ... particularly a short time after joining - some people just sign up to stick ads up. If someone has been here for a while contributing and then says they have something for sale then the moderators usually turn a blind eye.
Don't want this forum to become a mess of ads but keep its character as a place to find useful stuff.
I would suggest that it fair to sell moulds, but you usually cannot give away plans after they have been used to build a boat. The plans normally come with a license from the designer to build one boat only - once that boat is built then the plans cannot be used again without permission from the designer. After all that is how most designers make the little bit of money that they do ... from selling plans to people.
It can be different though if it is a published book containing the plans.
Anyway, welcome and enjoy the forum.
Best wishes

Hi Greg .
I hope you found your Vixen. Iam new to vixen ownership. I have a 17 foot fiberglass over ply, with oak deck and ply cabin. I think it was built mid 1970s. I have boat only without engine. I would like to ask for advice on the right size engine for this boat. Iam not interested in skiing , just good travel. Iam looking at the hull...... is it plan worthy ? or semi displacement ? any advice ? you sound like you understand the Vixen. Cheers. Shorty.

Shorty ,My Vixen is an inboard setup 138 grey moter moter tilted up at a angle to the line of the propellor shaft, using my gps 27 mphdirect drive top speed revs from memory 26-2800 rpm.
Presently Intend to fit a 149 red moter with a dog or nose clutch to replace the 138 system, so work in progress on this one .

Vixen Blues
Gday Shorty and Barry,
I am still looking. Plenty of other designs to look at as well.
Not sure if you are looking for in or out board.I don't know much about the former and enough to get me into trouble regarding the latter. However I know that my GRP centre console model was great with just me and 60 HP. She started to struggle with more than a couple of people on board and would have been great with 80-100.

Hi Bazza & Greg
Thanks for your info. Iam considering either a 60 hp Honda or 75 Honda. Both 4 stroke outboards. the inboard is another option , but I think I could lose too much inside space. Ive got 2 big dogs who love to get on board, as well as 2 bigger humans. the 60 is 4K cheaper, but I fear it wont Plane. The boat I think weighs about 450 ks , what would it take to get to plane ? Thanks Shorty.
