That way the glue join forms a barrier to water ingress to the rest of the board. If damaged, it can always be cut off & a new small corner glued in & shaped.

That is good sound advice. If you look at the photos of the old rudder you can see that it copped all the damage down at the bottom front corner, so having a separate piece glued on or made of epoxy make good sense, thanks.
