Thread: Painting guide/help

Thanks for the comments, very much appreciated, but im not 100% happy with it. I still ended up wih the lap larks and a few dings etc that i didnt pick up when at the filling stage. Everyone that has seen it says "Theres nothing wrong with it!" I see ALL the problems, thats the problem.

I have flipped it over now and im in the process of undercoating the interior and top decking. Im not enjoying painting the interior as access up the front end is a bit tight and its hard to get a roller in between all the stringers. Any other options for painting the interior? A brush seems to use too much paint and i only bought 1L of it.

Pre-painting is one of the many things you learn to do as your building skills develop. I often delay attaching the deck and side decks so I have easy access into fore peaks, lockers, etc. that would be nearly sealed up with the decks in place. I'll also paint the under side of decks, masking off where the beams and other places it lands on. Lying on you back with a paint brush over your head, slathering paint isn't especially fun. You can't truly enjoy the cleverness of pre-painting unless you've had to crawl around in ridiculously tight places, with paint running down your arm and dripping off your elbow.

Daddles, i know what you mean. I thought...... whats the point in dwelling over it and get this bloody thing on the water!

I would love to have pre painted but the only prob with that is i would have to travel back in time about 30 odd years to do it. Its a big pain as i think the timber needs to be sealed under the decking, or shoud i not bother as let it dry properly after a sail?

Yeah, that's what Daddles and his mates say to me when when I fuss over my 'Duck not being perfect. And my wife does too. "No-one will notice it!"

And I guess that one probably shouldn't, if one is actually sailing!

Well.....i have finally progressed into painting the interior. I thought i would never get there. I also thought i would have enough paint but it seems this stuff goes further than i thought.

I didnt spend a lot of time prepping as i thought most of the traffic will occur in this area, in other words very little sanding etc etc

Another coat will go on and then its onto painting the decking and the centreboard case area and support structure.

Lots of progress today! Decking has been painted. The sandstone colour seems a bit bright and maybe a bit too yellow atm but it will dull down when i add the non slip surface coating to it.

I still have to paint the centreboard case etc but that will take a bit of masking. It will be the same blue.

I like it.....What do you guys think?

Great! Nice colour contrast there, and the blue topsides should look great with the lighter blue hull, too :). Lovely job! Very clean and crisp, as Mr McCloud would say on "Grand Designs".

Now its time to finish off with a couple more coats, add the fittings, build a beach dolly and go sailing. Its only taken since November and what seems like a lifetime worth of sanding and breathing deadly fumes!

The yellow will soften up in time (maybe a few weeks). Is that some fine line tape, I see under the edge of the side deck you forgot to remove? Keep stroking, you're almost to shore now.

Another update..........

I can now safely say that 99% of the painting has been done, except for the rudder box and the name of the boat (although i may be able to get some stickers for that).

Anti-slip compound has been added to the interior and anywhere that a bum may sit during sailing. Majority of the fittings have been refitted, still have to make a trip down to the hardware and pick up a few more bolts etc to fnish that off.

Also, I have almost finished the beach dolly. I welded up some 20mm square tubing and some 20mm tube for the hull supports. A little bit more welding and some rust proof paint and that will be finshed.
