Painting Laws for first-timers
Dear fellow first-timers,
Here is the start of a list of painting laws that may be useful when you reach this stage:
1. Of course, read the label.
2. A boat should only be seen in the light conditions under which it was painted.
3. Pin holes left from construction steps and missed during patching will resist all attempts at cosmetic surgery.
4. Screw holes where parts will be reattached become totally clogged by simply taking the lid off the can.
5. . . . will add any more I discover. Contributions from past first-timers are welcome.

Always wait until your neighbor comes how with his new Lexus, before firing up the spray gun . . .

13. Hundreds of small black insects will die in the painting of this boat, and I don't regret a single one. No bad karma involved - they committed suicide just to annoy me.

14. Unless you're painting in an airtight dustless vacuum, with perfect relative humidity and temperature, and have just finished waxing off every hair on your body, and are painting in the nude, you're underprepared.
15. In line with 14, unless you've spent the GDP of a small African nation in terms of time and materials on sandpaper, filler, primer, filler, sandpaper, undercoat, sandpaper, filler, undercoat, filler, undercoat, , filler, sandpaper, filler, sandpaper, undercoat, OH GOD A TOPCOAT - ad nauseum, You've underprepared.
16. Clean, decent quality brushes are a godsend. Take care of them.
17. Synthetic brushes for 2-pack polyurethanes occasionally decide to melt from solvent incompatibility mid-job, just to be nice.

Always ask your other half to select the colors, because instinctively the Y chromosome will react with environmental and personal issues, to place two of the most incompatible hues, next to each other.

Preparation is the key! Preparation, preparation, preparation. You can never have too much preparation, but if you do then you're procrastinating... get on with it!
Edit: The better your preparation, the more likely you are to have runs, drips or plagues of small insects.
2nd Edit: The better the final job, the more likely you are to bash it against the workshop as you roll her out the first time.
3rd Edit: The likelihood of your youngest child continuing sailing is inversely proportional to the care you put into building his first dinghy
