    Default Polyurethane paint application problems

    Hi,
I am using the roll and tip method of painting my boat with epoxy and polyurethane paints but am having trouble with the rollers covers I am using. The solvent in the paint causes the roller to fall apart. I have used the 100mm "Little Ripper" rollers from Bunnings and am having trouble with them. I've tried foam rollers and short nap mohair rollers and have problems with both. The foam rollers dissolve and fall apart after a short time and the mohair rollers start shedding tufts of mohair which leaves lumps in the paint surface. The glue holding these rollers together is dissolved by the paint solvents.

It seems I should be using this type but don't know if they're available in Australia -

Thin-Nap Yellow Foam Roller Covers for Applying Epoxy, Paint, or Varnish

Can anyone tell me what rollers I should be using and recommend an Australian dealer who might sell them?

    Thanks,
    redx.

    Default Rollers

The best is the sleeved 100mm mohair rollers from Rokset. You need to first de fur them by hand (rub the loose mohair off) then wash then a couple of time polyurethane thinners (xylene). The glue holds up to both the solvent based polyurethane and the penetrating epoxy sealers for boats. I found using the Fortis Prime 820 epoxy diluted 30% with pure methylated spirits works fantastic as a Pentrating timber sealer.

Thanks for the advice. I just placed an order for two packets of those roller covers via your PYKonline website.

    Cheers,
