    Default Thre project

Yesterday I finally finished doing the machining of all the deck strips.
Today will be some work on the boat this morning and then family time this afternoon.
I have also purchased a sheet of 19mm marine ply for the floors of the cockpit areas. This may be a bit of overkill as far as thickness is concerned. The original was only 1/2" but it had some stiffeners screwed in place. Using the thicker ply I probably won't need the stiffeners. Just need a locating strip to firt the floor panel snug up against the front of the engine bearers.
I have the original floor for the front cockpit to use as a template but will need to work out the aft cockpit floor area to be covered.

With the excess plywood left over I should have enough to make the seat bases and maybe even the backs.

i hope that they are not too BIG as I do not know how to shrink them!!

The first photo is of the after deck area. All the overlay strips in this photo have been glued in place.
It also shows the deck edge strip that I have referred to with the Mahogany and the Silver ASH
The second photo is of the foredeck area. Not all of these strips have been glued in place yet.

    Default The project

Over the last couple of days I have finished the pieces between the front cockpit and the engine bay.
Today, I made the floorboards for the front cockpit and the seat framework for the front cockpit. I think that I may have to lower the framework as there will be padded upholstery on top of the seat base and the final height may have not much gap to the bottom of the steering wheel.
i haven't glued it all together yet so it's only a matter of lifting it all out undoing the screws moving things and rescrewing it all together in the new position.

I also glued in place a couple of the deck strips on the foredeck. Also did the fitting of another couple of planks around the engine bay.

The plan for tomorrow is to glue another couple of planks on the port side of the foredeck, modify the front cockpit seating and have a general cleanup.

When I design seating, that will have a cushion, I subtract 2" for a 3" cushion and 3" for a 4" thick cushion, so the "squish" factor is observed. I like to use a 3" fairly rigid foam for cushions in small craft. They take up the least amount of room and still keep your butt bone from bouncing on the plywood beneath it. I've seen some new, 2" thick, stiff foam that might work, though my skinny butt is easily offended, so . . .

    Default Seats

The seat framework was made today but I think that I may have made the a bit low. After all the fiddling around and small changes I made a big one and went too far.
I will need another sheet of ply for the rear bulkhead in the engine bay and the floor in the rear cockpit which will be more than enough for those things as well as leaving some over for the changes to the seat frames.

Tomorrow I will glue a couple of strips down on the foredeck and round the engine bay before going out with the family.

Default Strip planking on the deck

Over the last couple of days I have been concentrating on the strip planking of the foredeck. It's all ready for the final sections to align with the cockpit edges on the starboard side of the foredeck.

Today glued in place the strips on the port side of the foredeck. It's looking really spiffy and I'm more than happy with the laid deck pattern. It took a while to make the decision but it was well and truly worth the slight anguish in thinking about the layout.
I have also cut up the 2.4mtr length of the Huon Pine for the long strips outside of the cockpit lines on both sides of the boat. They are not long enough to do the required length in on piece so it will have a join at the rear of the front cockpit. It just can't be helped as really lon lengths of Huon Pine are difficult to find and fairly costly.

Tomorrow, if I haven't any paying work to do I will glue the starboard strip plunking down. Then if time permits I'll drag the thicknesser out and run the long lengths of the Huon and a couple of the short lengths of the Silver Ash cockpit trim through the thicknesser as well.

I will have to soon think about the Silver Ash for the coaming. I'm not sure how thick to make it but I'm thinking of no more than 3/4". The height of the coaming is 32mm/ 1 1/4". Any thicker and it will be too hard to bend and much thinner and I don't think that there will be enough timber to hold when the screws are counter bored. Just another boatbuilders dilemma!!!

Yesterday I finished the foredeck and thought that I'd share the results with you.
Today after work I machined up the Silver Ash for the coaming and screwed it in place.
Also machined up the long lengths of the Huon pine ready for laying.

I am impressed with what I have been able to achieve. It has taken almost three years to get to this stage but i can see the light at the end of the tunnel .

Thanks for the the compliments, Ben. The bollards that you have sold me will compliment the boat really well. If I had known or thought about them I would have put some reinforcing under the deck where they will be mounted. I may just have to thought bolt them with big washers on the underside.

The boat may be starting to look good now but it will be 3 years in the resto process on the 16 May and it was a real wreck when I first bought it. I have had some disappointments along the way and have at times felt like giving up.

Still it's all coming together now. With a bit of luck, I hope to have the deck strip planking finished this weekend, depending on how cold it is outside as I'm doing this in an open carport.

Have been watching your build over at cawpba, nice to see some pictures of the progress. Keep up the great work! "Cold" we went skiing yesterday, Glenbawn dam water temp is 20deg with 26deg day, whitecaps in the morning and was going to go home as the kids were not getting out of the car, by 11 wind had dropped and wife and kids all went for a ski (my return/enter key will not work in this post).

    Thanks for the compliments
I see that you are from musswellbrook, a nice part of the world.
A couple of my mates from my navy days grew up your town Roy Studdert and Graham Norton. They joined the RAN in the late 1960's. In fact as far as I am aware Grahams' sister still lives in town.

I am hoping to have the boat finished in time for this years boating season. It's only taken nearly 3 years part time to get to this stage but I can see the end of the journey.
    thanks again

The names of the ex Navy guys ring some sort of distant bell. Are they ex JR's or ex Fleet Air Arm per chance?
