    Default Slowly back at it

I hope that one and all had a very Happy Christmas.

i am getting my enthusiasm back so have been out to the shed a bit. I have spent some time cleaning up and getting things sorted out.
The boat is now registered which here is just a paperwork exercise. It's the little things like this that is helping get me across the enthusiasm line.

    Happy 2014 to all.
    Peter

I had an offer that I couldn't refuse the other day which has started me going on the boat again, although somewhat slower than in the past but progress is being made.Yesterday my friend organised for me to take the boat and engine to his workshop to install the engine. Go to who it was less than 30 mins to get it out of the back of the ute until it was sitting in the boat. Another couple of hours and it was lined up on the shaft and had a couple of SS coach screws holding it in place.Today the shaft gets trimmed to length. It needs to be shortened by about 30 mm. I also have to trim a couple of the turning fin bolts that may hit the underside of the sump. There is not much clearance between the bottom of the boat and the underside of the sump. Some adjustment to the cooling system needs to be done to get the engine hatch to close neatly but it was a major milestone. Later a hole will need to be cut to allow the air cleaner to clear the underside of the hatch. The kick in the bottom and the assistance is greatly appreciated.

The blood tests taken on 30/12 showed some anomaly in one blood test. This now has to be repeated and have to stop chemo till the results come back to the normal range. A bit stressed which impacts on so much. Feeling flat. Work shelved for a while

    Back on track again.

The deck has been sanded back ready for the last coat of varnish on the deck. I'm going to spray the last coat.

I have purchased the vinyl and some high density foam for the seat cushions. I have cut the foam to size The colour is a parchment colour. I will be dropping the whole package off to the upholsterer next Wednesday.

The rego numbers and name stickers have been ordered. A new stem post eye has been found and bolted in place.

This weekend there was a wetogether of a whole lot of members of the Classic Wooden Power Boat Association at Lake Mulwalla, Yarrawonga. I was planning on taking our boat along but wasn't able to get much done to get it into a show able shape this week. Would you believe we had a week with temperatures over 40c every day. Not good for working outside. There was hoping to be about 8 boats there. The temperatures were predicted to be 45,41 & 36 for the Friday to Sunday. I think a cool change has come through so the temperatures may not have reached the predictions. I hope so.
Yesterday I did a bit more on the boat, the cav plate was bolted on to the transom for the final time. Rudder installed and there is about 8mm clearance between rudder leading edge and the tips of the propellor. The rear seat framework was glued together today I'll start to varnish it. Probably get two coats on today.

I'm not sure if this is sufficient clearance? If this is not, then I may have to notch the leading edge of the rudder blade to get more clearance. I don't really think that I can mount the cav plate and rudder head any further off the transom.

So rear seat framework varnished, more coats to be applied over the next couple of days.

Measured up for getting exhaust pipes made. If I have time tomorrow I will go and buy a couple of new wheels and light truck tyres. The wheels and tyres that are currently fitted to the trailer have some age stress cracks in the side walls not worth taking a chance with them.

In the last week I have done a bit but not as much as I wanted. Work got in the way as well as the ridiculously high temperatures. We roast and the other side of the world is freezing literally.

So, foam cut out for seats, vinyl, foam and piping dropped off to the upholsterer. He wasn't home first call but the following day all was OK.

new wheels and tyres purchased and already fitted.
Today I sanded the inside of the cockpits and applied another coat of varnish. The weather was just right for drying today.

It was 72 (22 c) today and it'll be 77 (25 c) tomorrow. Water temperature is 65 (18 c), which is a bit chilly for me, but most think it just fine. I don't get in the water unless it's in the mid to upper 80's (29 c), so I'll have to wait a few months.

Keep stroking it, you'll get her done.

    Default Got there

Last weekend Williamstown held the 10th Annversary of their first Maritime Festival. It was held on the site previously occupied by the Melbourne a Harbour Trust later called the Port of Melbourne Authority. The site is 21hectares so it is a substantial area. The site is virtually vacant although a number of the sheds are being used to restore wooden boats.

As part of the festival the Classic Australian Wooden Power Boat Association were asked to display some boats.
The Project is nearing completetion after nearly 4 years, so I volunteered to put it on display.

friday morning I registered the trailer, in the afternoon the registration stickers and the name was applied and Saturday it went to Seaworks for the display. Sunday morning it was debuted to the rest of the CAWPBA members. It was the first time that any of them had seen the boat. I have to say that it was received really well and my handiwork received many compliments.
A week earlier I managed to locate some windscreen frames. These are really hard to locate. I bolted the frames in place. I was amazed that putting the bling stuff on the deck changed how the boat looked so much. The Perspex for the sides were OK but the front screen was not the right shape for the camber of the deck. I have made a template for the screen and will get some Perspex to cut it to shape.

There are quite a few more things to do before it get to be powered away but it's getting closer. The major things that still need to be done are the install a battery are do the electrical wiring, finish the exhaust system, overhaul the carby, install the fuel tank and fuel system. Then see if it will start before I put it in the water.

Im intending to fit a new starter motor, change from a mechanical fuel pump to an electrical one. One major departure from original I'm taking is the installation of braided fuel lines. Rather than the rotten steel buddy tube, rubber hose and worm drive clips. And the fitting of a stainless steel fuel tank instead of the steel one that was fitted.

Easter is usually fairly quiet in Melbourne so I'm aiming to take it down to a secluded area of the rowing course and see how it floats or sinks whichever. I have put a 750gph bilge pump in so I figure that if it leaks any more than that it probably deserves to go to the bottom!

I have been hoping for a further progess report from you and I enjoyed reading your latest - BUT - it's a bit like listening to some bloke describing his new girlfriend - words are OK but a picture or two is what we really want to see !!!

Since the display at Williamstown I have not done a great deal.
I have given the fuel tank to someone to get it shortened and re welded back together. It has taken longer to get it done than I hoped.
Easter was a disaster as my wife was in hospital so it didn't get launched.

i have done a bit on mounting the battery, purchased the positive and earth battery cables.
Next month there is a long weekend so I may try for a launch over that weekend.

    Default Christmas update

It's bee over six months since I gave any kind of update on progress on the boat.
Things have progressed slowly but recently the pace has picked up.
in the last six months I gave the boat a miss whilst I concentrated on health and family. It has worked as I have now a lot more enthusiasm about the whole thing.

in the ensuing time I have worked on the worst thing in my opinion, the wiring. It takes up so much time and at the end of a day there is not much to show for ones effort. It is all run now but I'm going to get someone with auto electrical understanding to check what I gave done before I put power to the circuitry. I really don't want to burn the boat before I've even launched it!
The carburettor was checked out and just needed a kit put through it. The carburettor is an original Ford tagged Holley 2barrel. Tracking down the numbers it would appear that it is off a 1960-62, 292 V8 truck probably an early F100.

The distributor which is the original has need overhauled. I was a bit concerned that it may have had to be a throw away but fortunately it was in reasonable condition and needed a good clean, new points condenser and vacuum advance mechanism. Sometimes the shaft bushes are worn as the lubrication to them is not really good. In my case they were OK. I bought a new cap for the distributor and may invest in some new plug leads.

i was intending to replace the old bendigo spring starter motor with a modern type until I found out that the flywheel had to be removed and every tooth on the ring gear would have had to have a lead ground not them. There was also a problem identifying exactly which starter motor was going to fit.
