Yet Another Putt Putt
Or should this be called a cruiser?
21' long 8' beam and an ugly superstructure.

Top off and looking better already.

Anybody interested in a 1938 Willys?
20190324_142133.jpg
The plan is for a trailerable overnighter. A low half cab, port holes. Not sure on the engine but unlikely to keep the Willys.
The first and lengthy task will be to spline, epoxy and glass the hull. Not dissimilar to Emily Grace. Another Putt Putt project

Gee wiz...you sure like those big refurb projects! Not something I would ever consider pulling on. All the best with her.

As you say, the original hull without the cabin looks like it has the potential already.
What type of timbers has it been constructed with?
I would also imagine someone with a 'period' Jeep would give you a decent fetch just for the motor.
Looking forward to the build in progress- Cheers,C.R.

Someone went to a fair bit of work to put this in and did it all the mechanical stuff well. If it wasn't so bulky I'd be tempted to keep it. It's running a 14" prop which has been mounted further back than the original to cope with the increased diameter. Rudder blocked out. Modified skeg. Extra 4" of keel.

It's always hard to tell timber species of the planking and keel section as they have been coated with all sorts of stuff (often red lead) over the years and then left to soak in the water!
Sometimes the only way is if you say have a piece that can be cut straight through and get an idea from there-Even then, timber loses the odour that can help determine the species. A lot of timber boats here in the south east NSW used Spotted gum below the waterline and then Oregon above to keep the weight as low down as possible. Tea tree was used a fair bit for knees and some frames as well.
Depending on where it was built, you may be on the money with Kauri, but whatever it is, looks like nice close grain material.
Interesting the way the prop and rudder was adapted to suit the means. A 'barn door' type rudder hung outboard similar to what's existing ,could work okay and would give you better steerage overall.

I've got an old Huon pine boat (100 plus years old), you can still tell it's Huon by the smell. I'm probably wrong but I think Huon is lighter in colour than Kauri

Fully stripped out now.
Sister ribs cut out. They're older than the main ribs so I guess she was re-ribbed at some stage.
I decided against the raised foredeck so that has all been removed also.

It's early days yet to be thinking of the engine, but I'm interested in any thoughts or comments on the options. The 3 engines below are all goers I think.
Marna DV1.
Single cylinder Diesel. 8 to 12hp. Apparently when it fires it really THUMPS. Weighs in at 354kg.
20190630_171733.jpg
Albin O21
Twin 4 stroke petrol. 10 to 12hp. About 110kg.
20190630_171749.jpg
Hardman
Twin 4 stroke petrol. 6 to 8hp. About 140kg I reckon. If anyone has some info on this I would appreciate it. I'm fairly sure it's the Simplex off shoot. Hall went on to build Simplex, Hardman built these. But maybe not for long cos they don't seem to be common.

All thoughts and comments very welcome.

The top plank has been rebuilt, gunwhale built, deck framed and sub deck installed. I would normally do all this later but wanted to strengthen everything prior to turning her over. The bow has quite a twist, so a chain, lever and winch were used to straighten it up somewhat prior to securing the deck. It has helped but I'll try to straighten it more as the hull is worked on.

Yesterday was turn over day. Quite a harrowing experience actually. It's the heaviest boat I've turned on these slings and I wasn't sure if everything would cope. But with a helpful neighbour and a glass of red all went well.
