That's certainly the sort of info I was looking for.

I have some 6mm Hempex (polypropylene hemp lookalike) that I will use in the first instance. I'm thinking bronze shackles top and bottom for the side stays as suggested. Then I thought to lash a thimble into the bottom of the forestay and tension with a chord, again as suggested. Or I could just tie directly to the eye on the bow but this wouldn't allow for the same tensioning advantage.

If I change to wire I'm pleased you suggest 3 to 4mm. 3.2 seems to be the standard wire used for balustrades and at some stage I plan to tool up to do some of this. So with attention to the differing loads this may work out well.

I recently acquired a mast (thanks b.o.a.t.) complete with fittings and stays. It is almost identical to the one I am using except it is about 600mm longer and is made to step in the bottom of the dinghy. It will probably be used on the next putt putt patiently awaiting restoration. The stays are galv wire with chords knotted above the eyes as shown. I imagine this arrangement leaves the eye clean to act as a sheave.
