    Default A question about painting.

I'm about to paint a kayak in two colours. A white hull with a blue stripe.

I shall paint the hull first. Then I shall lay in masking tape and brush in the blue stripe.

My question is: do you leave the masking tape where it is and paint, sand and paint again?

Or do you paint, remove the tape and re-apply fresh tape before the second coat?

    Regards,

    KevinB

    Kevin ,

1 you should have posted this in the BOATS//MARINE Thread,

2 Paint the hull, allow 24hours to dry and cure.

3 Tape & mask for stripes,

4 Paint strips , allow min dry time then re coat with out sanding.

If you paint the stripes on and do the second coat af the recommended time , you will not have adhesion issues.

once the second coat is touch dry , carefully remove the tape.

    Default Question about painting.

    Jeff, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I perhaps I should have asked in Boats, but I'm glad you're here now.

I am interested in your point (4) where you say not to sand the stripe between coats. Should I instead just ever so lightly rub over the stripe with a green pot scourer or similar to remove any nibs?

I'm entirely in your hands. Whatever you recommend I shall do.

    Again, thanks.

    Regards,

    Kevin

    G,day Kevin
The paint tin should show a recoat time.
If you recoat in that time, the coats will achieve a chemical bond (for want
of a better word to describe it.) Keying to create a mechanical bond is only
required if you go past that point in the curing process.
That's the theory as explained to me anyway.
You need to pull the tape while the last coat is soft enough to tear cleanly
along the tape edge. I usually pull it while the top coat is still fresh-ish to
ensure a sharp edge. Others leave it a bit longer.
    regards
    Alan

A tip for getting really clean taped off areas, is to apply a coat of the base paint first, let this dry, but within the chemically active window, then paint the stripe color. Unless you use costly "fine line" tape, paint tends to bleed under the tape edge in places, particularly for the novice painter. By painting with the base color first, the only color that can seep under the tape is the color that's there, so no harm, no foul.

As Alan mentioned, pull the tape while the last coat is fresh, so it doesn't tear. Also pull the tape at a very acute angle, which also helps "shear" the paint on the tape edge cleanly.

    Default Paint question.

Thanks Alan and PAR for your replies.

I'm rather pleased with the way my kayak is coming along.

You have helped me a lot. As with everything one learns, this will continue into a paint job that needs to be done soon in the house.

    Regards,

    Kevin.
