    Default Hartley 16 restoration

I have founbd an old stripoped Hartley 16 going for a song but it needs significant hull repair and I am wanting to reconfigure it to look more traditional, changing the rig to a Gunter style with maybe a cutter set up forward. Anyone heard of anything like this being done before or got any tips on aspects of the redesign I should consider?

I'm building one and this is my advice -

    1) there is a plan drawn for a gaff rig available, and I'd use that if you want an old-fashioned appearance. A cutter rig will be annoying, I'd feel, with little benefit. A gunter rig is the same shape as a bermudian anyway, its advantage of a two piece mast for small boats completely lost on a boat this size and actually a.dding the complication of an extra rope.

There are a few things you can do to make it look pretty and "traditional" but in the end it's not, really, so you go as far as you're willing. I'd always try not to make the boat more complicated though. Gaff rig adds some benefits for cruising, and extra ropes and detailing can be fun, but keep the purpose in mind.

A cutter rig on a 16' boat makes hanky size sails, which just increases windage and weight, while decreasing sailing ability. A gunter rig can't carry a cutter headsail option. The gunter rig is poor to windward, particularly compared to Bermudian rigs.

The gaff option is the way to go and the math is worked out for you, so no guessing about CE/CLP lead, sail area, etc. Change the shape of the cabin sides if you like, switch to the gaff rig if desired, but entering into designing a new rig for her, requires a fair bit of understanding.

If you can't find the gaff rig plans, I'll take some scans for you and email them. There.s not a lot of detail except spar length and such, but enough to go by.

Would adding a mizzen be beyond your thoughts?

A mizzen could be added, but will require more than casual thought. A divided rig on a 16' boat doesn't make a lot of sense in regard to efficiency, though the ability to hoist a mizzen mule can be handy at times. The addition of a mizzen will decrease windward ability some and the proportions would likely be more yawl like then ketch. To me this is adding a fair bit of complication to a fairly simple boat, with little benefit except aesthetics.
