    Default Rot Tool

    Hi shipmates,

    I was chatting to a kindly shipwright about my humble bucket of rot at the marina the other day and he suggested buying a tool to cut away the rot: a rockwell sonicraftrer. It has a orbital plunge blade. I couldn't buy one so he suggested the Bosch PMF 180. I bought one and the plade blunted in ten seconds. Bought another blade but it was $25!. And the blade doesn't have teeth on the side (groan). So you can't run it along the ply.

    Any one know where I can buy cheap blades for the Bosch?

    PS We got the rotten transom cut out yesterday and I have the ply to replace it next weekend.

    Ebay - there are a number of blade suppliers there, at prices that don't require you to believe that the blades are coated with gold and supplied by Fein.

    Another option (if you have room and don't need to cut against an edge) is a trimming router with a narrow tungsten bit in it.

    another tool which works well is a 115 or 125mm angle grinder.
    Depends where the rot is.
    I think the vibro cutter (or whatever you like to call it) is a finesse tool.
    The (very few) occasions I've needed/wanted to do something about rot
    needed no finesse. Just lots of material removal.

    An old broken hacksaw blade can be ground and fitted to whatever "multi tool" you've purchased. Making blades and other "tool invention" is the hallmark of the common boat builder.

    Broken hacksaw tool, eh? Clever. Thanks for the eBay tips shipmates. didn't think of that.

    Progress is going well. Each weekend I cut out more rot, find more rot, feel depressed, cut out more rot, find...

    But progress is progress!!!

    If I post pics I will only get more "match and petrol" comments. Great for moral.
