    Default Tammie Norrie- Kit build

    Hello All,
After reading this forum I have decided to take the plunge and commence my first boat. Here's a bit of background:
    Design:
I have chosen the Iain Oughtred designed Tammie Norrie (previously called the Grebe I believe) after consulting members of this forum and being lucky enough to have come across a pleasant fellow, and now friend of mine named Richard, who lives three minutes drive away and who has built a Tammie Norrie and is now building a larger boat. The Tammie Norrie suited my desire of a good sailing boat that could be rowed well if the occasion called for it. Most importantly was the ability to launch, rig, sail or row and recover the boat on my own. The live-in Minister did not warm to our previous sailing experience when we owned a 28ft GRP sloop, so I'm on my own. I was contemplating the Shearwater but the price was the same, the effort to launch and recover would be the same even though the boat was 2ft smaller, so I went with a boat I liked the look of... after all I'll be building it for several years!

    Purchase:
After much faffing, umming and ahhing I eventually settled on a planking kit for the build. I chose this untraditional and less-intricate method of build because I wanted to de-risk the build as much as possible. I know my limitations with wood work and the more I could reduce the potential for learning-on-the-job mistakes the better the boat would be and most importantly the more fun and enjoyment I would get out of the build. It's better for to be engaged and happy rather than annoyed and perplexed... well some of the time anyway. The kit is a Jordan Boats (UK) kit made here in Australia under licence. I went with a distributor in SA that also provided the timbers I need to 'turn-over' stage. Thus far all dealings with them have been fine, there are one or two hiccups but they have been addressed with haste. I would make two comments though and that is that I often felt I should know what I wanted (eg kit vs sheets, what timber parts etc) and I think I eventuallly frustrated the supplier with my novice questions. Perhaps I should write a 'a build-your-own-boat buying guide' to aid others. The only other comment I have is that it seems very difficult to get an actual quote sometimes, I guess because of the work required to construct a quote with proper lengths and current timber pricing, in the end I bought on faith that I would get all timbers to 'turn-over' stage, and so I did.

Anyway, the parts all arrived and I'm off and racing.

I have a blog with more info: seansboatbuild.blogspot.com

    Cheers

    Sean

Looks like a terrific project Sean, and well under way. Thanks for the post and I'm surprised that you haven't had more feed back. I had a look at the blog, too, and it's going to be fantastic for you to look back on, as the job wears on. She sure is an attractive hull. Well done.
