Default what kind of timber best for rubbing strakes?

Im replacing the rubbing strakes on 38 ft ketch - the old ones are pretty much rotting away - id like to replace them with something that wont rot but my knowledge of timber is a bit limited - i was thinking of nz kauri pine which is very rot resistant but id appreciate any suggestions, info or whatever

I'm no expert, but if it gets a lot of abrasion in your case, kauri or any softwood will ding and wear fairly quickly. If your fenders take the hits it wouldn't be an issue. The oily hardwoods would be best- teak etc, but expensive. Ordinary kiln dried Aussie hardwood is tough, but not as flexible as new air-dried stuff, but cheaper than beech or oak that are imported. I'd bet you could find some beautiful KDH as 38 x 19 or whatever that will bend well and take a molding to shape it well. good luck.
