Many apologies for the late reply Greg - Xmas and the holiday season has got in the road of my build and the New Year has bought with it many, many ongoing domestic duties. A man can’t win! I'm following your thread with much interest in relation to your and Ofer’s outboards, however I’m still not convinced such a small boat requires such a thing Time will tell!

    Hello Laurie,

Hope the wild fires are not impacting you!! I'm not sure I'll use the outboard much but have gone to much trouble if it is wanted!!! I like your trailering cradles with leather and am also interested to know what rubber material you're using. Is there a generic name for it or a brand name I can look for? I would like to be able to just drop the mast in and fasten the headstay!!!

Son coming up to help feed long rips of oak for rub rails and coaming rails tomorrow. Hoping they will steam to the need curvatures... My best to you!

Hi Greg...apologies for the tardy reply. The rubber material is actually a floor mat that has been sacrificed for the job. I'm still tossing up whether to use that or go for the traditional mast pegs - won't make a decision until she's out of the shed. Domestic duties still calling!

Default 220 Mast Support Trail 7...

Have been thinking and looking a lot at other Boom Support systems whilst on the water but have concluded that what I have built already will fill the bill. Reasoning below…

    a) Moving the existing Mast Support system either side of the Tiller doesn’t fix the problem due to the curvature of the Coaming so will continue with this support system when taking down the Mast and Spars

    b) Whilst I’m on the water I’m thinking the Boom can be managed by a combination of the Lazy Jacks and the Main Sheet Block scenario used in Post “208 Aft Deck Fittings”

    c) The folding Boom Supports placed on the After Deck used by many sailors are good but I can’t find a good reason to change what I’ve already instigated

    Thoughts anyone?

Hi Laurie, I'm just putting a folder together after plenty of back and forth.

I think my choice was ultimately based on a factor that won't have much bearing in use on my boat. I have kept my 18' cat in a slip exposed to some rough stuff on occasion. The rolling in the slip required that I use a triangle to hold the boom from working everything attached. I don't plan on ever spending much time in such circumstances but the experience influenced me.

On the water with the big cat, I always haul the boom down on the central book crutch with the main sheet as soon as the sail is down in order to assure control.
On the little cat I will do the same on the folder and steer with the tiller under motor power.

I believe you are going to use oars. Simple is always good. I don't plan on using a topping lift but do have the lazy jacks set up for easy adjustment. I have just checked my seating position in the boat. If I row I will have to haul the boom up quite a bit or haul it off to one side with a preventer. If using a yuloh, I would haul the boom to a side. For this I would install a cleat outboard and amidships. I may do this. That way we could tension the sheet and the preventer and keep the boom out of the way.

Rambling, I know, just my thoughts

    Best to you!

Hi Greg, great to hear from you! Just clarifying that the Boom will only be in a crutch for trailering as previous photos depict, otherwise as mentioned above, the Lazy Jacks and the setup of the Main Sheet will be supporting the Boom whilst on the water.
    Cheers

Default 221 Mast Support Trail 8…

Can’t seem to get anything done on the boat! The rain arrived and gave heaps of water to the property and as you can imagine my backside is being hammered by the amount of time on the mower. I’ve got some acres to manage! Now we have the Coronavirus!

So...just some updates on how to manage the Spars for transport. Hope the pics provide some outlook. Oh, and just so you know, I have not rigged the Lazy Jacks on the correct side of the Boom!! Thankfully it's just a reef knot!!

    Hi Laurie!!!

...always nice to see an update from you!

I like that you show different angle of the work as you can really tell the method you've employed. I am also pleased to see the spar arrangement as I have this in my future to configure. Looks like you're about ready for the launch. Since you have no outboard do you need a registration number? Generally, in the States, when you have power, electric or gas, you must register. And have you applied "Meerkat" to the transom?

...quarantined at home and best to you!

    Greg

Hi Greg...only if the boat has a motor 3kW or more is Registration required. It’s interesting you asked about “Meerkat” because the signage is the one thing I’m actually working on at the moment. Attempting to come up with something that looks OK. A separate board on the transom is my current design thinking - with scrolls and stuff.
    Take care and cheers

    Default 221 Rigging Cont 2…

As mentioned in a couple of previous posts, I haven’t been happy with the positioning of the Mainsheet Block at the rear of the CB Case as it sits on the Case in some points of sail (eg. Post #431, 193 CB Management Cont...) In an endeavour to fix this issue I have spent almost the whole day looking for some sort of solution that meets the needs of its resting place and positioning on all points of sail and with the use of the CB.

I stumbled across an old plastic part from a vacuum system which I hope will fill the bill going forward. I attacked it with saw, file and tape and now have a situation which I hope, will keep it from banging around onto the CB Case no matter if the Boom is in or all the way out or CB is up or down or there is no tension on it at all!

    Default Rigging Cont 3…

    Please refer Page 31, #457, 206 & 7 Rigging notes…

Having completed the Eye Splicing on the Main and Gaff Halyards I thought it best to review how it all fits together so back to a full layout in the front yard. As indicated previously I was not all together happy with the amount of free space between the blocks for the Throat and Gaff Halyards and yes, it does not work for me.

Back to the drawing board and a review of how to minimise the length and so many, many thanks to Greg for his interpretation of this setup on “The Woodenboat Forum” website. Refer “gregleetaylor, Garden Tomcat, Post #948”. I’m going there!

First job is to modify the existing setup on the Mast to take the new Tufnol Cheek Block that will replace the existing Single Tufnol Block w/- Becket which has been spliced in place. Splice a new eye for a U-Bolt that will attach the halyard to the Tufnol Cheek Block.

    Default 223 Nameboard

As mentioned in my previous post – the new Tufnol Cheek Block is now in place and the varnish requirement there is complete. The new eye has been spliced so all the rigging has reached a point that requires me to get the boat out of the shed…not there yet!

In the meantime I have been attempting to get an appropriate Nameboard designed, built and attached to the stern. To that end I have completed the design, procured the bronze lettering and am in the process of building the Nameboard.

    P6101087-1.jpg P6101088-1.jpg

It requires bending to conform to the Transom and the timber chosen from my existing stocks is giving all sorts of issues in that it doesn’t like being bent! I have been attempting the bend with Hoop Pine that I had in stock but it doesn’t like it. I’m on my last attempt which if it fails again I will be forced to procure some Huon or Radiata Pine, both of which are far more amenable to the bend process. Note that there are two additional pieces on top of the board and these will be used top and bottom of the lettering with further carving pieces at each end.

    Default 224 Nameboard

OK…Radiata Pine it is. Bending is complete along with the top and bottom pieces. The end carvings have been done and all bits glued together. Next step is trimming and finishing the board.

    IMG_0750-2.jpg

The carving either end and the top and bottom trim pieces will be dyed with Prooftint Maple colour. Then onto the major decision process as to the colour of the lettering background as this is yet to be decided. Any assistance with this will be greatly appreciated as I’m having difficulty deciding!!

When all is complete everything will be varnished.
