    Default 234 Safety Cont 4…

    Merry Xmas and have a great New Year!!! Here we are again!

    Firstly, many thanks Greg for your previous comment and I have taken steps to make them fit lower down as you rightly suggested! Just had to take the corner of them to make them fit that further down.

    You can see now how I have decided to complete this one last job prior to attacking the Rigging. Unfortunately, I don’t have the screws for the SS Saddles for the webbing straps that will hold the Buoyancy Fenders in place (they’re on order). I couldn’t get the Saddles in bronze, hugely disappointing! See the positioning photo example for the strapping on the port side. They will be required to be pulled down tight so they don’t get removed by the pressure of the water wanting to remove them.

    Default 235 Safety Cont 5…

    I finally had a very small opportunity to afix the Buoyancy Fenders in place. Unfortunately without the SS screws I was hoping for. After some searching around I decided to go with some bronze screws that I had in stock. Hopefully this shouldn't cause any problems. I do have to cut some grooves in the corners where the strapping goes or they will just pop out if she fills with water and that's not what we want!! Also need to reduce the length of the strapping a bit as there is too much there at the moment.

    So...I'm nearly ready to get her out of the shed!! She's ready but the shed isn't! Just need to complete some ground work to ensure she'll be on level ground when she's resting on the dirt floor there. To complete this I have a couple of concrete footings to be laid in readiness for her. Just need spare time and good weather.

    I just made a plan to go sailing April 29! Have to put aside small things and hop to it. There is nothing like a deadline to motivate. That means careful sailing with NO capsize with NO Flotation. I will have a saftety net as the sailing is with a group of like minded fellows.

    Your floataion is good I think. I would want to test mine but that is a whole different set of practical concerns. At least you have contigency measures! Well done Laurie!

    Default 236 Mast Cont L…

    I refer back to "218 Mast Support Trailering Cont 6…" where I have added a pic of the Mast Base paintwork. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had completed this the wrong way around! It’s been redone and have also extended the paint up the Mast an inch or so. That’s the third attempt to get this part of the Mast completed!

    She’s out of the shed!!! Just need to find some time for the next job ie. Mast Wedges. Stay tuned – I’ve got all winter to make her ready for the water.

    Default 238 Mast Cont M...

    As ever, it's been awhile but I have got some things accomplished. I have made an effort to protect the base of the Mast where it goes thru the Deck and have cut up a rubber floor mat for that purpose. I have also decided to go with a single Mast Wedge as mentioned in "the book". The leather stitching will be at the fwd position when inserted and the Mast Wedge aft. The Wedge may require some additional support so it doesn't split in any direction!

    OK guys - somewhat of a disaster! I had an accident and fell over the Boom and broke it in half!!! Can anybody offer the correct join I should use to put it back together? The dimension is 58 high x 42 wide. It broke in the middle. I don't have any intention of making a new one!

    Hi Laurie,
    I’m a wood lover not a qualified wood worker. Nobody has offered some suggestions so I thought what I would have done if it had happened to me.
    Your post does not state whether it is a ‘greenback’ or a ‘compound’ fracture. However I would treat both much the same way. First I would rejoin the boom as best I could by applying, as thin as possible, a suitable glue to restore the boom to size. I’d allow it to dry/set while the boom was on a jig that ensured it set straight. I’d then scarf the boom in the longest cut possible. Then glue the joint, clamp it and place it back on the jig to allow it to set straight.
    When that was done I’d cover the whole join with light glass and resin as they do with strip planked kayak or a hollow surfboard builders do. It shouldn’t show and just looks like a well varnished piece of timber.
    I would not be too worried about the strength as the pressure on a sail is distributed along the mast and boom and ultimately on the leach. As the main sheet is attached to the end of the boom where the bottom edge of the leach ends the strain along the boom should be evenly spread. Having said all that I would launch the boat in the early morning when the wind is usually light. Then keep sailing and listen and watch to see how the boom handles as the breeze gets stronger and hope like hell it has worked.

    I'm thinking to insert a new length about 600mm long with two oblique scarf joints at 180mm long each.

    Looks like the break is centred on whatever fitting you drilled a hole for? Says a lot in itself. Was it a heavy fall or just a glancing blow? Personally I’d be making a new one for peace of mind. I know you don’t want to hear that but it looks like you need to increase the dimensions around that fitting and taper away from it perhaps.
    if you’re going to persist with that one then a scarfed in price is going to be the only way or maybe you can cut down the centre and make a lamination of further pieces to build it up again.
    Also can you make a strap for that fitting ?
    Either way is more work than you’d hope for.

    Default 240 Boom Breakage...1

    Further clarification - the Boom broke where a timber dowel about 10mm in dia had been glued in to replace a limb end grain that had worried me and had been removed. The attached pic is my current plan and there will be two of them spaced about 300mm apart - haven't quite decided on that spacing yet or their orientation. Appreciate any assistance with this...
