I would make your scarf longer and the nib less, say 10mm. Save up for some straight grained wood too. Have you got any of that wood left, if so can you saw out that split to 3 or 4mm and glue in a spline to stabilise that side of break? Just throwing around ideas now.

Thanks for the input Whitewood and Andrew - I have also posted on the Wooden Boat Forum in a further effort to get some more response. It’s in Building/Repair titled “Boom Joint”. It’ll be interesting to what further suggestions come to fore.

No worries Laurie. Just had a look at WBF and now that you want to lengthen it as well, I’d be doing two of A back to back. One each side IOW. 12:1 scarfs.

    Default 241 Boom Breakage 2...

So…after much procrastination, research and mail review on the subject I finally decided to go with two straight splices 235 long (basically a 5:1 ratio), glued and screwed on either side. I also contemplated adding dowels but instead went with bronze screws. Time and usage of the boat will tell!

Just need to clean up and add the required finish then back to getting her ready to hit the water!

Neat work Laurie. Tradition recommends at least 8:1 for scarfs but not too serious if it lets go. You could prob manage to sail without a boom. Take a shackle key with you!! I don’t doubt you’ll be keeping a close eye on it. Screws will help to reinforce it but make sure they’re well sealed in.

First Happy T day a day late Laurie. I had somehow lost notifications for your updates here (again) Im home for US T day and wanted to say thanks for all the help you have given me. I could not have built this boat without you!

Many many updates from me so highlights only at this point, details later:

    I launched this past May
I broke my mast and boom this past May driving under wire at foreign boat ramp
The boat did not float on her lines, needs ballast forward
The gaff saddle I used did not function as it should
I am repairing an altering maybe 8 things for the coming season
    I love the boat
