TS16 frames
Ok I have gotten to the stage of gluing the frames together and I have two questions.
Firstly on frame 4 it says that the temporary cleat at the bottom should be screwed but not glued. I assume that means that the frame itself should also not be glued together at the bottom?
If not why not? What is the purpose of leaving that unglued?
Secondly frame 1 it says that the space between the two gussets should be filled. What with? Epoxy? Timber? Foam? I have no idea.
Thanks again guys.

This is only a guess because I know nothing about the build but seeing you say 'temporary', you'd screw the cleat to hold things together but not glue it so you can get it off again afterwards (some plastic tape over it will stop it being glued to the frame).
You'd glue the frame together. There'd also be some supporting structure for that joint so have a look for that - seeing this cleat is only temporary might I be right in suggesting that structure is fitted later?
Secondly frame 1 it says that the space between the two gussets should be filled. What with? Epoxy? Timber? Foam? I have no idea.
Thanks again guys.
Any chance of some photos?

I think I understand, what's going on. Frame 4 likely has a temporary floor or cross "spall" to hold the lower futtocks together. It'll be removed later in the build process, so a few drywall screws will do nicely until that time comes (no glue, just like the instructions say).
I often spec a filler piece in between my gusseted frame sections too. This allows you to use slightly thinner gussets stock and doesn't leave a place for dirt or moisture to collect, that will be difficult to get at (for cleaning) after it's built, also it's stronger too. Cut a wedge, using the same stock as the framing material to fit the gap between the gussets and glue it in place. This really cleans up the look of the frames in these areas too.

Could it be that frame 4 gets cut away later for the centreboard to drop through?

Without the drawings we can't be very specific. From the drawings, which frames intersect the CB?

From very hazy memory - I only pulled up the floor boards of mine once...
Frames 1 & 2 are forward of the cabin ?
Frame 3 is about level with the front of the cabin ?
Frame 4 would be just behind the front of the centreboard ?
Frame 5 half-way along CB case & has same instruction ?
Frame 6 at trailing edge of CB case ?

To quote Haretlys book, " The plan will show where the butt joint is and whether the gussett is glued on both sides of the frame or not, Some frames have the gussetts temporarily nailed or screwed on one side only so they can be removed later so a bulkhead or seat front can be fitted".
Also in the book it states in various places that there is quite often gaps in the butt joints etc in relation to frames he even states that joints open to about 1/16" is ok and not to be concerned as the gussets will be suffice, any larger though a piece of timber is to be glued in.
Hope this helps

See, it pays to read the plans/book ... but it's a lot more fun asking us

Read the destructions etc
What sort of kill-joy are you Daddles ?
Next you'll be expecting people to actually build to the plans
Everyone knows it is much more fun to improvise & ad lib first.
(and then re-do it the way the designer "suggested"...)
