    Default Turpentine timber query

    Hello,

    Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with epoxy gluing the Aussie timber Turpentine. I posted a question on this forum a while back about fitting a keel shoe to the bottom of my boat and one person recommended I use Flooded Gum. Reading about Flooded Gum's characteristics tells me it has a low Marine Borer Resistance rating whereas Turpentine's resistance is rating 1 "Highly resistant". This is a desirable thing as my boat will be permanently immersed in salt water. However, the datasheet on Turpentine says it is "not easy to glue". So I'm wondering if Epoxy Resin or Sikaflex sealer will bond to it?

    Clean the surfaces with a fast evaporating solvent, then glue immediately,.

    If this is to be a sacrificial timber , then clean as above then bed in the sika flex , and secure with s/s screws or your preferred fastener.

    Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for the advice. I was going to bond a length of timber to the bottom of my F/glass boat then fit a sacrifial piece to that using Sikaflex or similar.

    I wonder if acetone or denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) will work as the solvent for the timber or is there something better?

    Default The Turpentine.

    Hi Jeff,
    Was given some many years ago, & thought I would have a go at it. So I had just put a new Blade In the Bandsaw.
    So whatever you do don't cut it with the Bandsaw, as I used up a Brand New Blade in 30 Secs. Could not cut anything as there were almost no teeth left.
    So split it with the Axe

    I saw some thing similar in a sawmill years ago , a slabbing saw 1.6Mt dia with all the teeth bent down, turns out , they hit a rail spike in the log , the tree had grown over the spike which had been driven into the trunk.It had cut 3/4 through the spike .
