Default Waterline ! Where is it

Sorry to bother you boys but have a small question . Have been trying to restore an old Hartley Flareline (i believe ) and have spent the last 18 months stripping out the old stringers and other rotted stuff . I now have a bare hull and although i have a vague idea where the old stringers went was wondering is there a way or system maybe by way of measuring from the gunnels perhaps to determine where the waterline should be at rest . Have been reading this forum for over a year and feel unworthy of your help but Mik helped me before and since then have realised that this is the question I should have asked then . Sorry for the long post

    Howdy Garfy,

What do you mean by get your stringers level? Usually the only things that depend on the waterline are a cockpit floor (if self draining) or getting the paint right at the end.

I might be missing something though - it's happened before.

Id like the stringers to be parallel to the waterline when the boats at rest as I intend fitting a fuel tank between the 2 central stringers and theres not much room for adjustment as the tank will be very low in depth 100mm approx and dont want it to sit rear end up .

Howdy Garfy, There is no easy answer to this one apart from having a look at a plan and then it may not be that useful anyhow. Is there some indication of where the cockpit floor was originally? or the seat tops? Generally these things are designed to be level.

If the boat was fitted with berths or a galley top - it is more than likely that these were originally planned to be level.

you may get some information from the Hartley site from photos or the study plans. http://www.hartley-boats.com/powerb.htm

I bought the study plans for the Flareline 20 and it does appear to be the same hull but they are only sketches and don't show the framing . Although she had a cabin and wheelhouse which basically disintergrated , there were never any internal joinery such as seats , galley etc . Maybe I should bite the bulllet and purchase the plans
    Thanks Garfy
