    Question wooden keel

My mate asked me last night if i could help himput a new keel on his boat as the old one has rotted off.

The boat is 18' and moored in Brisbane Waters (Central Coast NSW).

The Keel is about 1 metre long and also supports the rudder bracket.

I am considering either brass or stainess steel bolts as the mild steel ones in situ at present have rusted out.

Can anybody advise me on the best timber to use for this job.

It will spend it's life submerged and I am quite aware that a very good protective paintjob will be necessary.

    Thankyou for any assistance

    Arthur

I would go for bronze or stainless steel and would also have a look at tallow wood if thekeel is being made out of one piece. It has and hard wearing qualities. Alternatively have a look at Red Meranti which is , I believe, quite resistant to decay.

    Default Bolts

Brass is to soft and will not hold. Bronz is the only way to go if you can afford it. it is not affected by electric curents which is another subject, other wise stainless.
