we went for a quick run around the bay and did a bit of fishing my sister and her husband joined us in my old boat i built last year (she took some action shots of my boat that i'll post later when i get them) we trolled about for around an hour then tried some drifting only to come back in to the old faithful netted mooring buoy(which is one of the outer moorings in the bay that never fails to produce fish) had a few chucks with a metal lure but no takes so i thought I'd start packing a few things away. Cast the lure out let it hit the bottom put my rod down and started packing up, next thing all hell broke loose my rod shot across the boat nearly tacking my finger with it, and very luckily the reel got caught in the rowlock (or it would have been a gonna) after a short scrappy little fight up came a pollack of around 3lb.
there was also another dinghy there but had to anchor up as i was already on the buoy he had a small schooly on his first cast,

Fantastic, Honkers and thanks for so many shots. Great to see Domino in her natural element. I expect the tide seemed to take forever to come in.

Not really - the tide comes up really fast, so not long to wait. Plus I had to get my gear to the boat by foot and of course.............. take lots of photos!!

Here is the other Domino in my life
We got him two years ago from the animal shelter after he had been involved in a traffic accident, he suffered three broken legs and both top and bottom jaws were broken and needing to be wired resulting in nearly all his teeth missing, he now suffers the odd fit/cramp? we think due to the accident and also he is very nervous, but he is a real character.
He may look sweet and innocent but he still seems to love his hunting with great success.

So, you barged around the harbour in an outrageous manner, tried to knock a hole in the hull with a fishing rod, got scales and guts all over that flash new paintwork and forgot to tie her up properly after you left her on the mooring (oops, you haven't realised that yet).
There's not a lot of room in the Yellowtail is there ... and mine has a ruddy great big centreboard box reducing it even further.
Onya mate. Well done.

I just can't get my head around the fact that this forum allows me the pleasure of sharing the first fish catch (in story if not in the eating) of a bloke more than half way round the world (and he isn't even upside-down in the photos), in a boat I've watched him build, that was designed by another bloke in Sydney. And I haven't left the house!
Enjoy that fish Richard, and think of all the people down here in Australia who have had the benefit of your experience. You make me more determined to spend some time fishing too-if I can learn to sit still long enough.

you don't know how close i came to putting a hole in her in my excitement i took the wrong passage out of the bay for the state of tide, and passed within feet of a large rock only inches below the surface (didn't tell the girlfriend till we were coming back in) i soon realised my error as the water colour changed from a nice aqua to a dark greeny brown
i don't find it to bad seeing as the last dinghy i built was only 10' the yellowtail has more room and is a lot more stable.
i can see the problem with the centreboard box, it must take up a fair bit of room, plus you have the seats running the length of the boat on both sides.
have you decided what your doing with yours yet keeping and finnising or selling her?
after all the comments down on the beach yesterday and today when i just nipped down to check her on her mooring, the man in charge of the moorings came down to have a look at her as so many people were talking about it he needed to see her for himself.
i'm very glad i built mine especially after your recomendation

yes it does seem a bit strange Rob
but if it wasn't for all you people on this forum down under i would have never built my Yellowtail and would have built a Hartly Spearfish 12' that i have the plans for (come to think of it i may still build the hartly as a winter boat) no..no.. get that idea out of my head
anyway heres a few picys of my Yellowtail on the water (she slices through the water nicely )
a spot of fishing
on the way back in

Woohoo!
Boy am I jealous-she looks great, bigger on the water than I expected. What a credit to you,and what a way to christen her, scoring a catch on her maiden voyage. You can keep those horrible tides though.Seeing I have to repaint my hull anyway now,I think I'm going to install a lower gunwhale like you have-that contrasting sheerstrake really set off the boat.Congratulations mate-what's the next project going to be?
Cheers,
Dave.

Well well well how did I miss this, the launch day that is.
May I add my conratulations, she looks fantastic and thanks for sharing the build with us. We are of course very envious of the fact you built her so quickly and by hand. Satisfaction in the extreme to be sure

Question about your outboard Richard-
-I'm trying to decide between a 2 or a 4 stroke and was wondering about your impressions-the blokes on my fishing forum have mixed ideas, and they probably all have planing hulls anyway.Apparently there was a great 2 cylinder 4 stroke made by Johnson which went out of production a couple of years ago,so I'll go with Mercury as I can get both at the right price, with a 5 year warranty.
Cheers,
Dave.

well all i can say is i am very happy with my Mariner 5hp four stroke she cruises happily doing 6 knots at three quarter throttle and I've managed 8.2 knots on full throttle.
as regards a two stroke i can't help you there as they are no longer manufactured for the UK market due to excessive emissions.
hope this helps in some way Dave
hows yours coming along ?

That's just the information I was after Richard-
-it tallies with what the dealer expected for the hull but it's good to hear it confirmed.8 knots is better than I hoped for.I did also look at Torquedo electrics but a suitable unit would cost twice as much as a 4 stroke at least.I may get a cheap bowmount electric later just for fishing-they're great for the sort ol lure fishing I like doing in rivers and lakes. We've had weeks of on and off rain here so I've held off recoating for a few clear days,I'm not taking any chances this time.I'm going to start looking at trailers this week-it's finally all coming together.
Cheers,
Dave.
