    Default Select grade decking - how good should the face be ?

    Hi all,

    I've just had a bit over a hundred metres of merbau decking delivered today sold to me as select grade at the usual Qld price of $4+ per lm.

    My perception of select grade was that the face should be pretty much perfect with no surface defects, however quite a number of lengths have patches of rough surface chips that I'm not happy with.

    I'm hoping others can give me feedback on what constitutes select grade decking, and if they have had similar problems.

    G'day.
    AS2796.1 & .2 cover light decking as well as T&G flooring.
    Select grade may have torn grain (chip out) to a depth of 1mm.

    Remember depth must be measured with a depth guage and feeler guages. Not an eyeball and a builders tape measure.

    Also. AS2796 allows for 5% of the total amount of timber to be of the next lower grade before any sort of claim will even be considered.

    Thus Standard Grade allows 2mm depth for torn grain (chip out).

    I thought that the $4+ /lm was for standard and better...

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for the replies.

    Michael - Paid $4.20 lm and specified select grade, so I'm not sure what your saying ?

    Might try and post a photo tomorrow - chips would be less than 2mm in depth but are in reasonably large clusters.
