    Default AJ's Kayaks (for HairyMick)

    G'day Mick
there's been more than one boat so a long-ish answer. Did have a web-site for a while but that ISP account expired & I'm relieved of the effort of maintaining it (hooray!!!)

I have done all my designs except the first pair using Gregg Carlson's "Hulls" progrem.

Boats 1 & 2 "Dabchick" were 6'2" skiff kayaks when the kids were small. Took Bolger's Light Schooner, scaled it down by 1/4, added some freeboard, a little extra beam & decks. dabchick09.JPG (69.7 KB)

Boat #3 - "Clayton Bay 90" - First-born outgrew his so I came up with something that was pretty much a 1/2 scale Bolger "gypsy" bottom with a deck on it. Big enough volume to float me. (Sold it earlier this year.) cb90e.JPG (61.3 KB)

Boat #4 - was the two little kayaks turned into a miniature catamaran - Called it "Double Dab" (Sold it earlier this year too.) double dab28.jpg (78.7 KB)

Boat #5 - "Clayton Bay 130" - was a "proper" kayak for my daughter who weighed about 20kg at time. 130" x 16" - design range 20 - 50kg. Has quite steeply sloped decks to keep chop from coming into the cockpit & minimise effect of wind. That worked so well & is so fast I had to come up with something for me to keep up with her. CB130-102.jpg (63.8 KB)

Boat #6 "Clayton Bay 144 Mk.1" used ideas from #5 to suit 50 - 100kg. 144" x 20" Got the hull right - docile & stable. Steep deck from idn't allow enough room for my knees & feet. My sister in Toowoomba now owns it & is giving it a thorough work-out up there. IMG_0131m.JPG (40.4 KB)

Boat #7 "Clayton Bay 144 Mk.2" was intended to fix the deck from #6 (which it did) but I tried a couple of other bits & pieces too which have been varied success. Finer ends - it is noticeably quicker at near 0 power input (same top speed), but less stable due to slightly squarer cross-section. IMG_0058sm.JPG (53.1 KB)

"Clayton Bay 144 Mk.3" is designed not yet built - combines the hull from Mk.1 & the deck from Mk.2. No idea when I'll get around to building it. Too many other things sucking time & money at the moment.

    cheers
    AJ

    G'day A.J,

Thanks mate. I didn't know you had designed them yourself.

I just love the lines of the one in the last piccie - very, very nice.

    Thanks Mick
I like it too. That's why it has been very hard to fix the foot-room & knee-room problem.
Making room inside adds quite a bit of height to the deck chine which un-fairs that sheer sweep.
Think I've got a reasonable compromise now. On paper, anyway...
Thinking about it, I'll have to build it. My lad & wife don't like the Mk.2 at all.
Got a Eureka to do sometime.
And a decent sized sailing boat to replace 'Teal'..
    cheers
