    Default the boat project

    Hi everybody,
Finally, after many years of putting it off, I have decided to go back to my younger years (2nd childhood here we come) and go back to boating , more specifically pottering around in port phillip bay by myself .Sailing in a simple, single handed yatch ( never could spell it ) Sailing gizmo.

I have fond memories of the mirror, Heron, hard chine moth, OK dinghy and the gwen 12, in which I did once compete in my teenage years. Now comes the hard part. Do I build the Hartley TS16 As which I remember was quite a good gadget in its day , or is there a better mousetrap out there which exibits the same characteristics.

This is where the HELP comes in.Is it still a worthwhile proposition to build the hartley, or are there better boats around. At this stage all suggestions would be very much appreciated as to people's thoughts on this matter.

I have spent the last 40 years fooling around with racing cars of all descriptions, and the time is nigh that I get away from those noisy, smelly items and spend some time with the sound of water slapping down the side , and of the cracking sound of a mainsail luffing.
so what is the way to go? buy it, or build it ? and what ?

You'll get on the water far cheaper & quicker in a TS16 if you buy second-hand.
Figure around $2000 for "needs work" on a "functional" trailer to $9000+ for competitive A-class on a good Dunbier.
Between those numbers you trade off features vs condition vs 'in-class"-ness.

But you won't be able to say you built it...

so what is the way to go? buy it, or build it ? and what ?
what is more important to you? the build? or the sailing?
do you really want to just potter ? or is there still some competitive streak left over after the track?
How fast do you want to potter?
Assuming you want a lid, how much head-room ?

TS16 is a good boat but a bit long in the tooth as designs go, but a hotly contested class racer.
A couple of alternatives were kicked about a bit in a thread a few months ago for pottering.

Is there anything of interest/use in there ?
    cheers

    Hi again,
It is to happen, A brand new squeaky clean Hartley TS 16 is in the paperwork stage, soon to be in the lofting stage. I have looked and looked for the last year or so, but for me It is the hartley. I have finally finished with all things stinky and with my wife's blessing here I go. I will probably get myself into all sorts of trouble with the construction But Who cares !! Still not sure as to being an "A" class racing version or just a pottering around one but it will be constructed using the best of materials and the best of my ability. so here we go !!
    Finger crossed

    Hi Roger,

Just go for it. There are still 16's being built and an excellent class to join and sail with. I was recently talking with a bloke in SA who is building his 3rd or 4th Hartley 16 and is still very competitive.

Forum rules state that you have to post plenty of pictures here so we can all enjoy them too!

    Good luck with the project.
