builders plate
This issue of builders plates has been done nearly to death lately but several issues still are not clear to me , does an amateur designer need a third party to approve his design ( for i expect a fee) or can the builder be the qualified person required by this rule, will an amateur have to have some sort of qualification in marine construction to qualify, the compliance department do not know nor does the rec, boating dept, where that leave the amateur who is building a one off, bearing in mind that the rules state that any variation of the approved plan will be against the rules , this could mean moving or altering materials or bulkheads or adjusting a cabin , any ideas, peter

re builders plate
Hi mark , I quite like the idea of a trailerable /live aboard river cruiser, so being a fairly competent person i reckon that i could build a pretty good boat something on the sharpie style hull design .but these rules for builders plates seem to have bypassd the amateur one off builder, and cater for businessess selling a hundred or so boats at a time , just where does a amateur stand and who do i ask for advice that can be relied on at registration time. peter

If you saw the ABC show tonight (12/10) on the Excalibur 'accident', it seems - at least in NSW - that any such 'qualification/certification' is voluntary & not regulated by the government.
Of course doing a bodgy job & lying about it will get you charged - in the case of the yard owner, manslaughter x4, but he only got 3 years & is appealing.

builders plates
no i did not see that , but from what i know the excaliber could not in any way compare with a home built composite family runabout or river cruiser , as has been said before most accidents and loss of livesseem to involve quite expensive factory built boats, ie dont run into an island at sea at night with eighteen people aboard ! or indeed in the uk a few years ago when a dredge in london went over the top of a party boat at night, peter

One of the first questions asked on the rego form when it comes time to register your boat is" Does your boat have a builders plate? Yes/ No
If no- you cannot register your boat."
Now the Downside to the above.
1/
When it comes time to sell, your resale value will be less when compared to one that has a plate
2/
You won't be able to sell interstate.
It's up to you, but just a thought
