Hi mark , I quite like the idea of a trailerable /live aboard river cruiser, so being a fairly competent person i reckon that i could build a pretty good boat something on the sharpie style hull design .but these rules for builders plates seem to have bypassd the amateur one off builder, and cater for businessess selling a hundred or so boats at a time , just where does a amateur stand and who do i ask for advice that can be relied on at registration time. peter

If you saw the ABC show tonight (12/10) on the Excalibur 'accident', it seems - at least in NSW - that any such 'qualification/certification' is voluntary & not regulated by the government.

Of course doing a bodgy job & lying about it will get you charged - in the case of the yard owner, manslaughter x4, but he only got 3 years & is appealing.

no i did not see that , but from what i know the excaliber could not in any way compare with a home built composite family runabout or river cruiser , as has been said before most accidents and loss of livesseem to involve quite expensive factory built boats, ie dont run into an island at sea at night with eighteen people aboard ! or indeed in the uk a few years ago when a dredge in london went over the top of a party boat at night, peter

Actually, it's for everyone, including the "one of" builder.

One of the first questions asked on the rego form when it comes time to register your boat is

" Does your boat have a builders plate? Yes/ No
If no- you cannot register your boat."

I see that you live down in South Australia. In your State, the legislation has not yet been passed, although it's on the table. I would suggest that you either register your boat now, being that you have an idea of its dimensions etc, or you can begin laying the keel, taking a photograph of it with one of those cameras that insert a DATE in the picture. That way, if you don't launch till say, 12 months time or more, you have proof that your keel was laid prior to the legislation being passed and it won't require a plate.

Now the Downside to the above.

When it comes time to sell, your resale value will be less when compared to one that has a plate

You won't be able to sell interstate.

It's up to you, but just a thought
