Caledonian Yawl in cold mold construction
Hi all,
I'm planning to build a Ian O Caledonian Yawl in cold mold and as always when starting a new build I try and scrounge up any building blogs for whichever method I'm using. I've searched on the net but had no luck and the various caledonian yawl forums, has anyone seen info on one of these being constructed?
This boat will be a departure to what I usually build but our area by Port Phillip Bay really only has infrastructure for small monohull boats and our local launching ramp has a fairly low bridge at it's entrance that necessitates lowering masts for transit.

Hi Jaric,
plenty of good CY info here The Caledonia Yawl & Voyage of The Aegre • View forum - All about the Caledonia Yawl
Not much on doing one cold molded though. I have built many of these in clinker ply (with another started last week) can I ask why you want to cold mold the boat instead of clinker ply?
If you wanted the round bilge look strip planking would be quicker.

But clinker would be miles faster than either. Such big pieces go on and they are finished apart from coating and varnishing/painting in one hit. And little fairing!!
The original was is a pretty efficient way to build a boat.
BUT it depends on what you want to do - it is your boat after all!

I'd like to bright finish the boat above the waterline and I like the look of a diagonal cold mould over the appearance of strip plank the boat is going to be drysailed and kept in my factory when not in use so will live a cosseted life. I also have more experience with cold moulding than strip plank and have calculated I'll have quite a few western red cedar veneers left over from another project (I overestimated the amount of skin the boat has by quite a bit).
