Thread: Canoe stern cray boat

Doing more searching on the internet , gee , there are some beautiful little Norwegian boats , and some of the Scottish Miller Fifer boats aren't too shabby either.
The Devlin Oysta is a very pretty little thing , but I'm not too sure about having the door f/ward on the wheelhouse , I think I prefer the more conventional fishing boat styles.
The Adrian hull though , of Axel Stenross looks a beauty.
Maybe not a big load carrier , but that suits me fine 'cos to me it looks easily driven.
Anyone seen a good little canoe stern cray boat here in OZ ?.
I've seen them a bit over 30 ft , nearly bought one , but I want to find one under 30 ft , and 10ft beam.
I've also seen a Finnish frozen snot boat the right size , but I prefer wood.

Yes , I've seen that advertised for some time .
Its probably worth a try , although I wouldn't have my hopes too high.

I've thought about that e-bay boat , I don't think I would use it.
I'd have to pull the deck and cabin off for starters.
Here is the Devlin boat , new , without her gaff rig , looks ok.

buy it, sail it home ?
take six months off, see the world, meet some lovely Somali boatmen...
ok... go the other way & traverse the Panama & South Sea Islands..

It would be nice to be able to do that.
And 10 years ago , I would have jumped at the chance , but not now.
There is an alternative , put it on a ship , for delivery here , but then you have the worry of the boat drying right out , getting here.
There is also the opportunity of travelling on the ship , and keeping the boat hosed down , but at the end of the day , it puts a lot more price on the cost of the boat.
I'm still hoping something will pop up , in Huon Pine , a Wilson boat maybe , or an Axel Stenross or Kevin Argent.

I wonder who would be the best at designing , and building such a boat.
Nothing too fancy , but a safe , relatively stable platform to do some fishing , under sail.
Garry Stewart probably could , but he has his work cut out at the moment , or for quite some time really.

Hi Rob, a couple years ago I was thinking about doing the boat building course at The Franklin boat shed. the plan was to live on the steel boat and get the students along with me to build a motor sailer and sail that back to NSW. They have built some beaut motor sailers, and might be worth talking to.

Yes Ian , it would be nice to do something like that , but I'm afraid those days are past me.
I'll have my work cut out maintaining a wooden boat , building it is out of the question.
I'm seriously thinking of paying someone to do a lot of the maintainance work on HS.
I believe it should get easier from here , I should have had her out of the water and in the shed a lot earlier than this , and will have her (or her replacement) out earlier next year.
We evolve , we learn (or should) and go off on another tangent.
HS is the right boat , at the wrong time in my life , I know what I need for now , its just a matter of getting it.

Kamada is a Tasmanian double ender cray boat I toyed with the idea of buying , before HS.
A well built boat , I like her , but she needs serious horsepower to drive , as she is very beamy , and heavy , not a real motor sailer proposition.
Does anyone know of other cray boats ?.
I also toyed with the idea of buying an old double ended net boat , with a 1920's Kelvin in it , but it didn't "tick too many boxes" either.
It was a classic boat , but not for me , now.

The Juliene is also another beautiful conversion , just a bit bigger than I want at 35 ft , but very nice , just the same.
