Cherry 16 or Welsford Navigator
I need some advice on choosing between a Cherry or a Navigator, very different yachts, one you sit on, and one you sit in. I mainly want safety and stability.
I think the cherry would be eaiser to build but has a very different rig to the yawl rig. The navigator sail set up is versatile and the missen is great for handling.
Just how stable are these two dingys for a single hander.

if you want simplicity for a single handed sail boat then , the Cherry 16 you only have the main & Jib, to worry about, build is simpler, and the added bonus of a dry cabin to sleep in.
if you want the beauty of a traditional hull design, the Welsford design is beautiful, and would have a better resale value than the Cherry which is a more modern design , even though it is now over 30 years old.
It is a matter, where you have to write down the + & - for each, and decide on how and where you want to use you boat, how much you want to spend on materials , sails ,trailer, fittings etc.
The traditional design will in the end take longer to build and possibly cost more than the modern, they will both do the same thing , that is sail,
it all comes down to time & money and personal preferences, in the end

cherry 16
Thanks VK4 for your reply, the Cherry would be quicker to build and has the cuddy.
I have built a mirror and a 125 in the past and the Cherry is just a bigger version of a Dingy and I like its looks, but the way you sit on it seems a bit insecure.
Do single handers use life lines and would it round up into the wind if you let go the rudder if you happened to fall out.
A dingy would go over but I would hate to think the Cherry would sail off dragging me behind on a life line.
I would like to hear from anyone who has sailed a Cherry and get there opinion on its seaworthyness and stability .
I have read conflicting reviews on its stability but do these people have a Cherry and speak from experience or just speculating.
If I built one could you build some water ballsat tanks next to the centre board to use when single handed to add ballast when needed.

You could build in some water ballast , or add a couple of 20Lt water jerry's in the cockpit,.
Have you looked at the JARCAT's the 5Mt is a bit larger than the Welsford&Cherry, but it is a very stable Catamaran, well siuted to single handing, and at 300Kg hull weight , not overly heavy to tow behind a 4 cyl car, it will also preform very well.
if you are not pushing the Cherry to it's limits , falling out should not be an issue.

you could also look at sam devlins nancys china. you sit in it and its got berths for 2. and a choice of rig. i seriously considered it for my first build, even bought plans (dirt cheap) so i may yet build one.
