Hi Bob,
I've not put time lines on any part of the build just work on it when I feel like it. I had hoped to launch for summer or at least for the GWBF but it's starting to look doubtful although with a short burst of enthusiasm I may still make it.

Any further news? Sorry I missed you when I was over in Adelaide; I didn't get to see Daddles either, although I did finally manage to catch up with b.o.a.t. and see his kayaks right up close :).

Yep sorry we missed as for Coquina well not a lot to report.

Made a quick and dirty steam box to bend the floor boards which worked out well. Then lots of trial fitting and I'm oiling them now ready for fitting. Still need to make the hold down clips for the removable ones.

Um oh glued and plugged the cabin deck ready for sealing but it's been too hot to do that. While that awaits I've been varnishing the underside of the thwarts ready to fit then I can fit the remaining deck/thwart knnes and finish varnishing.

Oh I've been eye splicing the steering gear and fitting the blocks etc.

And then there is the piece de resistance is my Xmas present to myself, was going to be a fathers day pres but Jim was on holidays. A Jim Reineck made bronze Herreshoff anchor.......cool or what.

Hi. I have just finished the tawe nunnugah raid and the hobart wooden boat show in my Coquina "Wizened". I can give you details of bouyancy I fitted that allows self recovery if interested. A coquina cant be self recovered without adding bouyancy.

Hi Denis yes please I have been pondering the issue.

I'm thoroughly annoyed at myself at the moment as some time ago I had hoped to finish the build in time for Hobart but alas work commitments got in the way and worse I couldn't make it at all. Oh well Goolwa is coming up still not Coquina but hey hope I'll catch you at the next Hobart show.

From the photos I've seen it was a ripper and I guess you must have had a terrific time.

Hi Mike, Wizened was that far out in front of the pack atthe Tawe Nunnugah Raid most days they were sitting ashore waiting for the BarTruck. Re flotation, Wizend sailed thatwell and was handled by a very competent crew she never looked like needing flotation(as viewed from a great distance from a very slowwww whale boat). Denis, nice to meet you down south.

Thanks for the kind words. Les and I thoroughly enjoyed the raid and so did our partners who halffollowed the raid and half bushwalked elsewhere. 10.1kts down waves under reefed main in thesouthern ocean and 8kts on dead flat water later with full rig were highlightswe will never forget along with all the friendship and the whole scenery thing.A fantastic time.
With regarsd to floatation. My first test was with about 200litre of foam packed under the soleboards. This fits nice and blends inwith the boat. It is retained by thesole boards which are screwed down except for the centreboards that are sprungagainst clips. If doing it again I wouldleave say the centre 150mm either side of the centreline out. This in my case would be harder to retain butit does improve stability after you right the boat as it allows the trappedwater to sit lower lowering the CG so providing greater stability whilebailing. With this the boat is very hardif not impossible to right using thecentreboard and when floating on its side is level fore and aft and roughlyimmersed to the centreline of the boat and after righting initially floats atabout 20 degrees to the vertical with the gunwhale awash which means bailingwhile avoiding a recapsize isn’t easy. As the water level is bailed down the boat returns to vertical. An assisted recovery would be OK avoiding along submerged tow to shore.
Next I fitted foam to the underside of the gunwhale strappedin with webbing. About 110mm by 130mmfrom the rear bulkhead to about 600mm from the bow. The boat now floats on its side level foreand aft with the centreline about 150mm out of the water. The boat can be righted by one person withthe centreboard and floats vertical and is stable down to about 70 degrees fromvertical. The foam isn’t that easy toremove but I intend to leave it in as this allows quite easy recovery.
Finally I fitted four (two per side) buoyancy bags of 40litres each. The boat now float levelfore and aft with the centreline at least 300mm out of the water. Thisallows very easy righting with the centreboard by one person and the boat isstable and can be easily bailed in say 25kts with associated waves etc. I was comfortable to take it in the tawenunnugah raid which has you off the southern coast of Tasmania and then inbehind bruny island.
