    Default David Payne TS

Just thought I might show off my latest boat. She is a David Payne design 18ft trailersailer, built in cedar strip plank, sheathed in West System epoxy.
It took me about 18 months to build, interrupted by a daughter's wedding and a family death. Below decks are 2 quarter berths and a V berth, metho stove, porta potti, seats for 4 and a table.
A lot of work but a lot of fun.

Lovely Graeme. You're going to regret posting this because when I've finished my David Payne Yellowtail, the beastie shown in my avatar, I'll be looking for something just like this and you might just find me buggin you. David does good work doesn't he. I'm currently working on his 6m cruiser at my boat building course. Bloody great lump of a boat but it's gone together very well.

    Cheers

    Sigh!

Well done Graeme..... I don't know if you'll inspire all those with boats underway, or cause a hissy fit of green-ness!!

That's what the greenie is for...to show my incredible jealousy!!

    Cheers,

    P

    Default Some inside pics

Some pics of the interior. The ply is Gaboon and I made the capping mouldings from dark Meranti. Can't lay claim for the cushions - I had that done by a local motor trimmer.

File size too big for one posting, hence this second one.

Very, VERY nice, congratulations on a lovely lady. To my not so expert eyes she looks a little "RL24ish, a boat I have fond memories of.

    Hi Graeme
Love your boat, have been thinking of building a sailer but have no experience at building boats at all. Have a full workshop and lots of experience in wood.
Would you mind if I sent you some questions as I really dont know where to start.

Paul - bung 'em on the list mate. We'd all like to know the answers ... or make up a few of our own.

    Richard, Paul, anyone
I don't claim to be an expert! Have built a few boats and happy to talk boats at any time with anyone. Private emails or forum, bring 'em on.

    Default Graeme's Boat

    Where do I start?
I like the look of Graeme's 'David Payne' 18ft design but after searching the net where do I get some photos or brochure of this type of sailing boat? Is there many trailer sailer plans available to build, do I have to look thru mags or can someone put me on to some books. (preferably with instructions) 18ft is about as much room as I have under cover so where would be the best place to start looking for 18ft Trailer Sailers.
    Hope someone can help.

    Paul,
Building any craft bigger than a dinghy is going to be a major consumer of time and money, so you have to do some research to make sure you are building something you can see through to completion. Boating magazines generally don't give much space to non commercial ( read "advertisers") built boats. Try Australian Amateur Boat Builder magazine for some ideas, books from your local library, Boden's Boat Plans catalogue, Boat Books catalogue, Duck Flat boats website. Sydney and Hobart have Wooden Boat Shows, I don't know about the other capitals. Caporn Marine in Brookvale are also very helpful with materials and some plans.
If you just want to get on the water quickly, look at some of the sheet ply sharpie designs, they generally look like boxes but they sail well and go together easily. The next step up are the ply planked multiple chine designs like the Hartley TS, still quick to build, look more like traditional craft, and have a large following. The TS16 and TS18 look nice and sail well, and the designs have stood the test of time but have a cuddy type cabin on a dinghy type hull. Have a look, too, at the Everitt "Micron" designs from the UK.
I have been sailing for over 40 years mainly in dinghies and OP's yachts and I spent some years looking at lots of designs before I found the one I wanted to build. I wanted a boat that not only sailed well, which meant one from the board of an experienced naval architect, but one which looked like a yacht, not a box. Teepookana attracts quite a bit of attention at the ramps and on the water because the lines are attractive to the eye. David Payne has produced some really beautiful and accurate plans and I would suggest you look at his portfolio. He was a delight to work with and very helpful with the few minor modifications that I wanted to make.
Bear in mind that good plans will cost money, but it is money well spent and a very small part of the overall cost of the finished boat.

Liike just said above theres a whole swag of places where you can get designs... okay parameters 18ft max easy build

    Lessee...
Iain Oughtreds designs definantly... although not what Id call an easy build since he designs for clinker builds but uses ply... Id suggest getting hold of his catalogue of plans and his building book from flatducks then get the plans for his Caladonia yawl or similar from all reports awesome boats when complete... flatducks: http://www.duckflatwoodenboats.com/m...s/shoptemp.php

Try going through the store section of woodenboat.com on the net they have designs of everything from a Pooduck to a Malabar and prices arent too painful even with the conversion... if I may suggest one? try Crowninshields Haven 20 1/2 absolute stunner! and its only a mere couple of feet longer... on that note a bloke in the states completed one last year and built it to finish stage in a hired storage shed then moved it to his home built a small annex affair at the front of the garage and completed it and believe me Miranda is gorgeous! He also had never built a boat of any discription prior

Have a look at some of Phil Bolgers designs... he of the microbox design over the years Phil has designed some amazing yachts and small craft everything from a small day sailer to the Brigatine the "Rose" used in the recent swashbuckling movie "something or other Commander" hes been around for donkeys years and some of his older designs from the 30s and 40s rival in my view those of Payne snr and the American god of boat design Nethanial Herroshoff {sp} He doesnt have a website that I know of but is well known on any boatbuilding forum just seek and someone will give his address... actually I think Harold Payson would be one of the easiest ways of contacting Phil... no they had a falling out a few years back I believe... anyway there is a Yahoo group dedicated to Phil somewhere a google search should bring up literally ship loads of info on him

You could also go for a Couta boat which is a cool sailer plans are I believe availabe through someone over east

Or go to http://www.stevproj.com for Stevensons Weekender 16ft and Vacationer 18ft real great looking ply boats and the plans are CHEEP even with the conversion!

another this time New Zealander John Welsford http://www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz John has many small sail boat plans and some quite interesting ones like the small pilot boat called "swiftsure" which I think would be a real hoot to build and sail

If you want something more up to date try a catamaran or mono from the board of Mike Waller http://www.wallerdesign.com.au/ or the Jarcat from Ross Turner http://members.ozemail.com.au/~rhturner/ both these blokes design beginina at 20ft and many have been built in many garages around the globe

You can go have a gander through Selway Fishers site at http://www.selway-fisher.com/ or Glen L Witt's site http://www.glenl.com or Ken Hankinsons http://www.boatdesigns.com/

Or to make it a tad easier... then again maybe not... go to the MOTHER!!
http://www.boat-links.com/boatlink.html this site has a HUGE MASSIVE load of info on anything and everything nautical

Just believe me it will cause much unrest in your soul... you will spend many many months in a state of utter and complete confusion... and just when you think finally that youve found the design you want to build SOMEONE will come up with something you havent seen before and you are gone again!

Im now 4 years in confusion without an end in sight. but hey its a great journey

    Good luck!!

Oh edited to add the forum at http://www.woodenboat.com is probably the best source of boat related information anywhere with contributors from around the globe the wealth of knowledge experience and assistance is increadible... word of advice? stay out of the bildge! {woodenboat forum non boat related} things tend to get a bit crazy down there from time to time... but ask any question boat related in the upper levels {forums directly related to boats} and you will get a response within a very short period of time... if its related to a particular design thought or idea change etc very often its an actual designer or naval architect that will respond {credentials are verifiable} as I said one of the best resources anywhere.
Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

    Default Trailer Sailer

Hi Potterage, I am planning to built a trailer sailer and finally decided on the B & B Belhaven a 19' stich & glue design from Graham Byrnes (an aussie in the US).
    http://www.bandbyachtdesigns.com/default.htm
I've had the plans for about 12 months but work commitments keep me from starting. To get me on the water in the mean time I bought the other day an old Hartley TS16.

    Default B & B Belhaven

    Hi John
The B & B Belhaven looks a nice boat amazing the amount of room below decks. I would be a bit worried about taking on something from overseas because of my limited experience.(read none) I have been in contact with Graeme (started the post) and he has been a great help, I think I will be starting in a couple of weeks, if the costs turn out low enough.
