G'day Wombat200
Interesting criteria you've specified, have you looked at the Arvor 20? They fit a lot of your needs but they're a glass boat, the earlier versions had an 80hp nanni and were good for 20 knots whilst being reasonably economical. A personal dislike is lack of a decent opening side window on the cabin. Finding something equivalent in timber for the hull and putting a better looking cabin on would be the go.......
Cheers, David

The Bosun 23 from Mark Bowdidge looks like a pretty handy & versatile boat, wouldn't mind one myself ,maybe with a lightweight lift off 1/2 cabin/shade. It, although a bit longer seems to fit the requirements that Wombats stated. For myself I could see her good for the kids kneeboarding, camping, fishing, diving etc, might have to clear some space...
All the best from Jeff.

I'd ferry accross - whilst I know people who have kyaked accross Bass straight, I have no desire to do it in a 20ft boat.....
Havn't started yet... will be at least a couple of years before I do & I'm yet to see a design that really grabs me..... So far the Arch Davis Pilot boat (18ft) is the most appealing, despite being smaller....
Thanks for the other designs, I'm looking at them now..... The Outer Banks 20 is interesting, although I don't like the interior layout - I'm sure that could be changed.....
