M670 22' Australian designed Centre Console
Hi All,
To be honest, I actually stumbled in here looking for ideas for a totally unrelated (non marine) project (of which I found some) and felt some of you would be interested in a vessel I designed a few years back which was launched by her builder earlier this year. To be clear, I am a qualified practising naval architect and designing boats is my profession.
The design is known as the M670 and is a modern styled centre console 22' length overall. Fitted with a single 140 hp four stroke suzuki, she achieved a top speed of 33 knots during initial trials whist carrying 3 persons on board.
Construction is plywood cored epoxy composite, a modified stitch and glue style construction if you will. The hull features a positive freeboard self draining deck and underfloor fuel tank.
There is a little more information here, in an article that that was published in F&B magazine in August..

Feel free to ask questions, I am happy to answer where I can.
In the meantime, enjoy the photos...

Just a general enquiry about the M670. Is it only available in kit form or do you sell plans. If kit how much?
I am looking for a general purpose boat that could be used for occasional wake boarding, skiing as well as outside fishing . Subject to internal modifications seating etc would it be suitable for this purpose

Hi Strathfieldmens,
The M670 is only available as a kit. Send me your email address privately and I will send you some information that details the price of the kit and what it includes. Just as importantly, it will give you an idea of what is not included.
The M670 is designed as an affordable, economical and safe offshore fishing platform. Could it pull up a skier or wakeboarder? Given sufficient power the answer is yes, but could it compare to one of the dedicated wakeboarding boats in terms wake height and shape to allow decent wakeboarding? The answer is no. Then again a decent skiboat won't be suitable for offshore work for a number of reasons the first being lack of freeboard.
If you are looking for a boat that can be used primarily as an offshore capable fishing boat with the ability to tow some friends around social skiing/wakeboarding and tubing then the M670 may suit. If you are looking for a true wakeboarding boat then the M670 is not your best choice.
Customisation of seating as required is up to you. You could even make some removable if need be.

Hi Mboat,
I read the article in F&B with much interest, my circumstances at the moment, dont permit me to take something like this on, but oneday I would like to think I will have the time to give something like this a go.
By the way, the finished product looks great.

Thanks for the kind words Ironwood. Glad you enjoyed the article.
I'm looking forward to seeing many of these boats under construction and out on the water. The owner of the boat pictured is very happy with the final result. He is currently using it to reach isolated areas of the GBR between Bundaberg and Yeppoon.

Hi Mboat,
I have wondered since reading the article, what the boats rough water capabilities and performance is like. The photos in the article showed fairly smooth conditions.
Have you really put the boat through its paces in big seas, to see how it performs, and been able to compare it with other brandname boats in the same conditions?
Cheers Ironwood.

The link in my first post didn't include the whole article, so you may have missed the remaining info. Here's a link for the entire article which includes comments from the owner similar to what you are looking for. Fisherman and Boat Owner : Issue 156, Page 30 hope it works.
The photos in the acticle were taken inside the gold coast broadwater. It would have been nice to get some shots of the boat pounding over some sizable swells but this was not possible due to the limitations of the photo vessel (4.3m tinny) available which has capabilities nothing like that of the M670.
My own experience on the boat consisted of three days. Day one was an afternoon session up and down the broadwater. The Southport seaway was impassable that day with breaking waves right across the entrance. That didn't stop us riding a few swells in the seaway itself. Day two consisted of a photo session followed by some demonstrations to some experienced boaties I know. Weather still wasn't kind with rain squalls but we did stick our nose out for a moment or two. Day 3 was another photoshoot this time in sunny weather with more demos following. With 15 knots or so of breeze, a 1.5-2m swell plus chop on top, I personally drove the boat with 2 others on board outside for about 45 minutes or so. Into a head sea, we were able to maintain around 22-22 knots pretty easily which is a nice cruise speed. We could have gone quicker but given it was a new boat that I didn't own, we were nice to it. One of the passengers at the time (who also took the helm) is an experienced boatie and delivery skipper for one of the large cruiser manufacturers here on the coast commented on the way back in "There is nothing wrong with that!".
I am also happy to put anyone in contact with the owner if need be by email. (PM for the address)
I hope this answers your question.
