    Default recomendations please

    gday

i want to build a small sailing dingy/boat thingy.

i had a go at sailing a few years back and really enjoyed myself but cuting my hand up on the table saw put a stop to that and i know want to build me a small sailing boat to play around in.

i was learning at the southport sailing club in laser and X3? boats this is the sort of thing i am thinking of. i think there were also sompthing called a 29er that we used a couple of times?

i want sompting that when i tip it over i can flip it back up and keep sailing.

    thanks in advance.

    Carl,
If you haven't had a go at boat building before and want to practice on something that won't break the bank have a serious look here.

I can tell you from the experience of a novice (being me) Michaels plans are easy to follow and teach the finer points of epoxy etc.

I am yet to get mine in the water, its very close now so I can't tell you how it sails but I reckon if someone with the experience of Boatmik says they are fun and perform well thats good enough for me.

So go on build one then we can get the fleet growing for the next Nationals.

    Cheers
    Mike

Righdy Oh then what about one of these. Problem is most if not all the class boats these days are glass. So what are the classes that race at nearby clubs because you will want to race when you get the hang of it all.

Mik will be along to offer some guidence.

Assuming you really don't want to do any bailing, Bolger's "Gypsy" modified with a
deck might be the quickest built & easiest onto the water of all these. Performance
would be less than a Laser, but you might get lucky & find a second-hand laser rig
works ok in her. Or not !...

If you are willing to bail, Michael Storer's "Goat Island Skiff" or "Beth" would give you both performance and ease of build & handling. GIS would give you room for a
    passenger or three too. http://www.storerboatplans.com/

English bloke called Ian Nicholson designed a beach boat looked like a "Contender" when he lived in Adelaide. you could probably Google it/him.

I really like the look of Radoslaw Werszko's 4M dayboat. http://www.dinghy.pl/

AJ, some interesting boats there thanks for the link not found that one before.

Why do so many of the European builders have tiles on the floor of their sheds, a tad extravegant me thinks.

    u asumed right...

that bolger's "gypsy" looks just about what i want if i was to make it with a deck all sealed up. but its to big. it would be great if i could leave it down the coast but i think 2 boats is enough ancored out front of the unit complex.

what i really want is sompthign i can chuck in the back of the ute rip down to the broadwatter and have a play and when im done stick it back i the ute a come home again. normaly it would be me on my own.

i am probly asking to mutch but hey if you dont ask you wont find.

IN the ute - yes you ask too much (unless it's a helluva Big Ute !!)
Might be able to do something with one of Hannu's little boats.
http://personal.eunet.fi/pp/gsahv/index.htm Not fast but would be... interesting.
    or
    Gavin Atkin's Flying Mouse http://home.clara.net/gmatkin/flyingmousepics.htm & http://home.clara.net/gmatkin/freedes.htm

Getting a performance boat that light & handy. And short. And dry-capsize....
I made a miniature catamaran for my daughter that would almost fit in a 6x4 trailer.
Not a performance boat with me on it though !

Michaels Storer's "Beth" is the lightest & handiest performance boat I can think of off-hand.
There are also plenty of pics around of his GIS on roof-racks. A ute with trade racks on it
    would have no trouble.

A second-hand Moth from someone down at the Oxley SC at Chelmer (assuming
    they haven't folded).

    What about Flaquita ? http://www.lifebase.net/flaquita/
Lifebase server seems to be down at the moment, but the boat is worth looking at.

    cheers

ill keep lookign threw the links tomorow.

at teh moment i seam to be going round and round in circles.

if all else fails i could always desighn my own.
im sure it would be exelent considering moy nill knolage of sailing boat hulls.

but teh materials would be free so i can always use it forfire wood if i dosent sail.

    Weisyboy,

    What about this? http://www.dixdesign.com/paperjet.htm

it looks like a hoot to sail, easy to put together and similar in performance to the others you mentioned.

Of course !! Was in AABB last or last-but-one edition. Build looks like a cinch.

Didn't realise PJ is a Dudly Dix. Has got a good rep as a designer. Would be hard to go wrong there. (I'd better bookmark that Dixdesigns link)

    Howdy,

If wanting a boat for casual sailing a freestanding mast is the most important thing to simplify setting up and derigging time.

It also removes a lot of cost from the boat.

For example with the Paper Jet I would expect that for the cost of the rig only that the sloop rig will double the dollars quite easily compared to the freestanding one.

Skiff style boats are great - that's my background - but if you want something that is easy to rig and not too expensive the free standing rig option is the best way to go.

Also every bit of the boat you can make for yourself will cut the cost. If you have to buy a mast it is hard to get out of it for much less than about $500. But if you can make one and it doesn't need the fancy tracks etc then it is likely to be well under $100.

If you really don't like the PDRacer ... that is fine. But you should have seen the grin on the faces of the ex national A-class cat champion the father of a bunch of 16ft skiff champions took a boat out each - they couldn't be enticed in with beers and a barbeque so someone else could try the things. It is a box, but it is a box that sails well and FEELS right on the water and does all the right things.

But even if you don't like it, it does make the point about the cheapness and speed of rigging and the added costs of having a jib and stays.

The Paper Jet Lite makes the best sense out of that range for your intended use (even if it has less sail than the PDRacer )

    MIK
