    Default Sailing outrigger canoe

I'm getting started on another project, a Gary Dierking Wa'apa sailing outrigger canoe. 24' LOA, the plans provide options to build as a one, two, or three piece hull. The three piece version can be set up as either a 16 footer, or 24 foot, but each setup takes a different sail rig plus ama's of different lengths. I'm building mine as a two piece, that leaves me only two 20" wide sections to haul on my pickup I figure by the time this is built, the weather will have warmed to make painting likely to succeed, and I'll paint the canoe and my new pirogue in one marathon paint party. This should be an interesting boat to sail...vids I've seen they look like they really scoot.

    Default Sailing outrigger canoe

Great project: I'll be interested to hear of your progress. I have a copy of Gary's book, which I find inspiring. I have a 20ft outrigger of my own design under construction. The shell is finished, but then I got waylaid by rebuilding some 14' catamaran hulls a friend gave me, turning it into a gunter-rigged beach cruiser. My outrigger canoe was built over a jig and has a 'curved vee' cross-section shape. I am undecided whether to make it single or double outrigger configuration, or even build another hull and turn it into a catamaran. I wonder whether the ama would dig in when it is to leeward, in a strong wind. What configuration you are using with your 24 footer? Also, where can the video you mentioned be found? Good luck!

Years ago I saw a 42 ft catamaran rigged with crab claw sails up in Cooktown. Climbed aboard and had a very interesting yak with the owner about it. He was testing the principle of it. Don't know what he came up with, as we left him and headed north as he was waiting to head south. Would have been interesting to sail along side and watch it

I've just got a 16' Wa'apa built to Gary's design. The hulls in two 8' halves, I plan on building a 4' middle section to lengthen to 20' and to build a new ama as the current one is designed for tacking and these things should really be shunted. My other plans are to rig it with a crabclaw and (as an alternative) make a Gibbons-Dierking sail.
