Ahoy,
So I have been doing some heavy research and need some professional assistance.
I am in the beginning stages of designing a sailing outrigger decked canoe/open kayak 13-17feet and need some input on spars.
I am following the lateen layout of a SNARK sail plan to start out with:
Mast 84” or 7 foot and the spars are 120” or 10 foot a piece.
I am looking at two cost-conscious options for the mast:
1, plane this down with an aft rake leaving it rounded at the bottom and tapered at the top to 7’ maybe 8’:
1-1/4 In. x 2-1/4 In. Pine Hand Rail - PNE1203 at The Home Depot
Cost: $15-18 US
2. per this website CastleCraft Repair Tips for Snark Sailboats
Suggesting alternative mast options for the SNARK cut to 7’:
Allied Tube & Conduit 3/4 In. x 10 Ft. Electric Metallic Tube (EMT) Conduit - 101550 at The Home Depot
Cost: $25 US

For the boom and gaff I was thinking 1 ¼ dowels tapered to 1” ends 10’ long for about $20 US for both.
Or this:
Allied Tube & Conduit 1/2 In. x 10 Ft. Electric Metallic Tube (EMT) Conduit - 101543 at The Home Depot
for about $40US for a boom and gaff from suggestion of previous website.

Thanks for any input about strength/seaworthiness of either of these options or a combination of the two or an alternative for my soon to be built outrigger sailing deck canoe/open kayak.
Thanks in advance,
JJ
