Thread: Floating Timber Floors

G'day.

If I was ever going to do a floater, It would be Fastwood.
I've seen their production plant in Finland and was impressed with their Q.C.

However, As a producer of Real hardwood timber flooring, I can't recommend any floaters .

Do not get a floating floor with a SE Asian hardwood, they are way to soft for a Timber floor and dint like crazy.

Big River good product but a bit expensive
Interloc, have used about 1000m2 plus goes down fast and lock togther neat, have had problems with the MDF core soaking up water.
Ready floor, is backed by a full warranity and is a well priced product, limited species in single strip.
Fastwood, not much around these days, well manufactered limited species in single strip.

Borals silkwood is worth a look made from Aus timbers, price is not to bad either.

PS, before you lay the floor buy all the metal trims that you will need and install them as you go this makes a huge difernces to the finished product on how it looks.

A company called Trueloc make a premium product that has a 4mm thick timber veneer wearing surface and a 10mm laminated timber backing layer. As I understand it, the normal hardwood floor only has a 6mm wearing surface before you hit the tongue and groove and then its all over red rover anyway so the 4mm is acceptable to my way of thinking. This Trueloc stuff has a lifetime ??? structural warranty and a 25 year lacquer warranty. I've had a good go at the lacquer with some fairly coarse sandpaper and I think I left an imperceptable impression. The bad news is that I have been quoted around the $90-100 per sq metre, uninstalled. I was going to go Interloc which I think is a similar price but this seems to be a better product.

4mm top for an imported "hardwood" product may give you 5 to 10 years of service life.

6mm of REAL Aussie Hardwood will give a service life of 25 years +.

I know where my money would be going...

I am going down the path of looking at floating floors and this forum appears to have a lot to contribute, though I do note some bias toward the hardwood fixed floors that is not my particular requirement. Having said all that I am curious about the Boral Silkwood which is referred to in this thread, is it still considered a quality product at the top end of the market or has it since been topped..?
