Kayak Timber around Perth area?
G'day,
I'm hoping someone will know where I can pick up timber for a wood strip kayak, around the Perth or South West area as I've just moved to Rockingham from interstate (willing to travel for it, good excuse for sight-seeing).
Thinking Paulownia or Western Red Cedar (anything else worth considering?), haven't quite decided yet.
Any help much appreciated.

Paulownia supplier
Hey AWOL ... you'd better remove that "Melbourne" status in your profile... my first reaction was "What's a guy in mMelbourne looking for kayak timber inPerth?" but then I read your post.
You're on the doorstep of a very good supplier of Paulownia right there in Rockingham.
Highpoint Timber

Hurrell Way, Rockingham
(no association there except a happy customer by the way)
... is where I got my timber for for Shassie
I couldn't find a decent stick of WRC down this way so ordered and tripped up to Rockingham to pick it up. Very cheap but I cut it down myself. I believe that they will do any of the cutting and shaping tht you require but I enjoyed the whole process.
Like I said in my "jounal" on the building of Shassie I wouldn't mind having a close look at Meranti before I start my next!
Cheers mate

Thanks
Thanks for the quick reply, perfect, that place is virtually around the corner. I'll take it as a sign that this was meant to happen... (missus rolls eyes).
Great looking canoe, got any idea how many hours you put into it?
Cheers, Awol.

AWOL I see you're from Baldivis now! Good to see another sandgroper on the forum
if you're referring to Shassie
Details for the time and costs for Shassie are on the thread ... one of the last posts
About 255 hours as I kept a bit of a log as I was interested myselfRamps

there used to be a mob in fremantle called freo timber traders (or fremantle timber traders) From memory they were on rockingham rd, and they also have a small milling setup in the midland area not far from BGC's setup up that way. They used to deal in quite a few exotic timbers and also recycled timbers, and when I worked for them, (for a short time about 11 years ago) I saw some very nice red mahogany and other good stuff there, they also have equipment for ripping to size, moulding etc. hope this is of help, oh and don't be afraid to beat them down on price
