I bought gaboon from the only local supplier, and it was crap :mad: . I sent it back and told them to replace it. The new lot was a lot better, but it too was really ordinary . Crap surface. Voids (this is marine ply, it's not supposed to have voids). Hoop pine is heavier but about two thirds cheaper and a far superior plywood (huge difference) . The reputation that gaboon has suggests that the quality varies but, if you are tempted to go that route, have a good look at it first because the crap I bought was not worth anything like the price I had to buy and, having compared it later with hoop, not even suitable for building my boat (the stuff you do when you don't know any better ).

The other issue is the behaviour of the supplier (in sending out gaboon ply with obvious surface flaws and knots, not to mention the oil stain), which is why I don't buy from them anymore :mad: . They did replace it when queried but I fail to see why I had to query it in the first place, but that was two years ago so maybe they have improved their suppliers and their habits.

Reason for gaboon is primarily wieght.
I'll probably check Sydney and pick up myself.

One thing to consider with gaboon and weight is the surface plys. The muck I had soaked up epoxy and paint like a roll of paper towell. That's got add more weight than a plywood with a better surface ply. It also needed a lot of sanding to get a decent surface. So check carefully and think hard.

Personally, if building a racing boat, not something I have a lot of experience with, I reckon you'd be better with 4mm hoop pine than 6mm gaboon, but I could be horribly wrong there. As you can tell, I've been burnt by the stuff.

But if you're personally inspecting the stuff, you should be right.

Meanwhile, Redback has been made with two thirds gaboon and one third hoop. And she's perfect in every respect :eek: ... coz she's mine - I've decided not to lauch her because I might find out she's a dog . Just kidding. School holidays at the moment - good weather - fish biting in the Noarlunga river. Waddaya reckon eh? Tomorrow arvo - Dad in his boat, Dean in Mouseboat, fish joining us in both. Gotta be good.
