    Default Raised head brass screws???

    Hi all,
Anybody know where I can get some 6 gauge 19mm slotted Raised head brass screws?
I've tried just about everyone in the phone book and on the net. No luck.
I don't thing they are available in Australia and I would prefer not to have to order them from O/S.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Would have thought they would be redily avaliable from any general hardware or marine shop. Have you tried Blackwoods or Carbatec or specialised nut and bolt supplier or building restoration suppliers (must be heaps of these in your neck of the woods).

Most marine shops will not sell brass because it is not very compatible with salt water.

They corrode and break quite quickly. For that colour people normally use bronze.

Or are you just wanting to fasten down a brass strip or other brass trim - something non structural.

    Default Brass or Bronze??

Rod1949 - I've tried ALL of the local hardware stores. And the speciality stores. And the woodwork supply stores. And just about everyone else!! No luck. It appears that these screws have not been made in this country for about 15 years. So I've been told. I only want one cause the !@$#$%$%^%*%$ piece of crap screw that came with the brass door handle broke on the last little tweek to get the slot vertical.
But, as they're so bloody hard to get, I shooting for a whole box of the little beggers. Yeah, right.

Boatmik - I know brass & saltwater are mortal enemies - asking here is showing my level of desperation!! As mentioned above, it has to hold down a brass door handle, so I don't think bronze will quite blend in. But thanks for the reply!

Your sizing is confusing, a mixture of 6g (which is imperial ~ equivalent to 9/64th) and 19mm. Nearest I could find would be 1/8th x 3/4.

Not sure which type of screw you meant either... wooden?
or do you mean metal thread, like this?

If that's what you need, you can try Bolts & Industrial Supplies. The other option is to contact whoever (whomever??) made your knob, or maybe a locksmith?

Was in my local Bunnings yesterday arvo and I did see they had 8g x 20mm but no 6g.

So is it the gauge the is the issue?

    Default Gauge problems?

    Hi Darce,
A picture tells a thousand words

    (hope I did that right)

Darce, as far as I can tell, the gauge system is still in use for sizing wood screws in spite of the fact that we use a metric system out here. What you have shown is called a machine thread and is used mainly in metal or plastic (usually with a nut). Machine thread is always sized by 1/8" x 1" or 4mm x 25mm.

I cannot contact the maker of the door handle - they're somewhere in India.

    Hi Rod1949,
Yeah, gauge is a big problem. If I use a bigger screw size, the head will sit way above the surface.
However, I may have found a mob in the UK who can help me.
I'm just waiting to see if they ship O/S.

    Default No luck so far!

    Update!
I thought I needed 6 gauge screws - it turns out that I require 4 gauge
Needs to be a minimum of 5/8"
And of course, they have to be raised head solid brass.
That last fella came close, but he only has 1/2".
    So, still looking.
    Any help out there?

Try Lee Valley - www.leevalley.com - it is a dangerous site, you just keep wanting just one more thing...........

    http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/pa...=3,41306,41334
in lots of 10 or 100

postage will probably cost more than one packet of screws, so you might want to look around, or order a 'free' catalog or two
