    Default Timber for toe rails

    hi there,
I'm looking for timber to replace the toe rails on the side of my trailer yacht. They'd have to be approx 6.5 metres in length and about 75x35. Also need to be suitable for steam bending. Any suggestions on where to find this stuff?

If you want bare wood then Teak or Aussie White Beech are the usual culprits.

If painted (best for low maintenance) or varnished then it can be any semi durable species.

If epoxy sealed before gluing in place and the fastening holes are also sealed with epoxy then it can be anything.

I have seen a few guys use a stainless, ally or brass "D" section over the top of a timber gunwale strip. It means you can use a softer timber and it stops alot of scratches.

You can get it from most metal wholesalers.

I used teak. Originally varnished but too much trouble to redo so it's now bare wood and looks OK.
