Yeh, that was our last sizeable fire.
I was talking about just this thing with some mates recently. You can fish up at South Para Reservoir so I don't see why you can't paddle there.
The last paddle I had was in my mouse boat at Mawson Lakes. It's very grubby looking water. Might be a bit better now that we've had some rain, but I wouldn't want to fall out of the boat!
Our scout troop is planning on having more water activities down at West Lakes towards the end of term, so I'll probably have a boat or two out on the water for those days. As mentioned previously, at least the water at West Lakes is relatively clean.

G'day Hawk
AFAIK you can't even fish at Mt Bold.
Only a tiny section of lake & river is accessible to the Great Unwashed.
The rest is gated & barbed wired with "Eintrit Verboten" signs, complete with threats
of unpleasantness to one's person. Won't even issue the Brigade a key. Just asked
that we cut the link on the lock. When we do track inspections, they prefer to escort
us.
Have raised the question of access for canoes, rowing & sailing with a few senior-ish
SA Water people at Mt Bold & in town, and all have just about bust a boiler, raving
about 'protecting water quality' & etc, etc. You'd think I had offered to purchase a
favourite daughter or something, so extreme has been the reaction ! Gets even
worse when I queried the 'quality' of the water from the Murray....
Meanwhile every other state, including Vic who are also hot on "protecting water quality"
allow almost unrestricted water activities on their reservoirs.
Most odd. Only thing I can think of that makes sense was an aside by an Adelaide
City Council chap. He remarked that under SA law, the owner of a man-made body
of water is responsible for the safety of anyone who goes on it or in it. Hence only
members of approved clubs can use the Torrens Lake.
Mouse Boat hey.... Not related to Daddles are you?
Have you poked around the Salisbury wetlands at all? Look interesting from the
main road.
cheers

I just re-read my last post...not quite what I meant to say...
You can fish up at South Para Reservoir so I don't see why you can't paddle there.
I haven't tried the Salisbury wetlands, and yes, I've spied them while driving past. A mouseboat would go quite nicely there...And yes, Daddles and I do collaborate regarding mouseboats, only he prefers rowing mice and I prefer paddling mice.

That's two rowboats I've commissioned now Gavin Atkins designed the Rowing Mouse at my request (and my red Scrat is the first one ever built) and Mik came up with the Rowing Skiff partly at my request (and she's half built).
So Mike, when are we tackling the wetlands?

Big tide this weekend so it will mean fastish flows in the Onkapastinka but the weather looks like it will be really good so I'm planning on an early paddle on Sunday. Probably head upstream from Pt Noarlunga and then have the current on my side on the return. Low tide is just after 11am but I doubt there would be any appreciable flow above the road bridge for an hour or 2 after that.
Went up to Garden Island on the 30th as planned. Was a good workout - especially crossing Barker inlet on the way home into a stiff breeze. Well, maybe a bit more than stiff - there were whitecaps in the creek as I came out of it. Garden Island is a good location to plan a gathering on a particular day. If the weather is not so good you can still get out in Angas Inlet as it's relatively sheltered but still large enough to be interesting. In good conditions you can go a bit further. Best on a day with small tides though as the Inlet tends to empty out on a big low.Cheers, Bob the labrat

boating around adelaide
Hi , this is my first entry to the forum, i have just about given up on any plans to use my boat around adel, but having said that i often take my cartopper to port wakefield, but watch the tides, and a minimum chance of getting your car interfered with! an early sunny morning can be really good with not many people about , a new ramp and decent fishing, dont ask about the local reservoirs please! right know they are full to the brim and for sailers ,and canoes would be ideal , but no way will they let such dangerous people into there ! water. thats my whinge for the day ,peter

This is why working off the beaches has become a requirement for my boats

How would things go with a rowboat or are we talking something with a motor because you have to cruise ten miles before getting to anywhere useful. How easy would it be to poke around in or near the mangroves (remembering I'm in a rowboat)? Are there any fish reserves up there and if you can't go fishing, is it still an interesting place to poke around in?
