Adelaide regions - where to float your boat and what to use?
So lads, where abouts around Adelaide can we use our wee boaties and what's suitable there? Although the rest of this post talks about me and my boats, a general discussion with personal experiences would be really interesting.
The Finnis is dead.
The docks at Clayton resemble the old Glenelg beach before they buggered it up with those dreadful multi-story posh boxes.
What boating is available on the river now? Any thoughts on rowboat territory?
The Onkaparinga - fast flowing, stinky, but good rowboat territory.
There are the beaches but you need a boat you can launch off a flat beach (not Sixpence ) and need something that can handle some roughish water. Personally, I'm not a club person and aren't really interested in racing anyway, but realistically, the beaches are the closest water to me. What should I be looking at?
Westlakes is fun but how long before you start feeling cramped there? In what sort of boat? Am I being unkind?
Port River - I've only ever stood on smelly boat ramps and watched - what's it like out there? I suspect this is Sixpence territory if anything is.
Why do I keep feeling I should have a GIS? (probably because I don't have one, that's often all the excuse you need )

You may have to think about a larger shed. We should probably have a thread on sheds, more sheds, bigger sheds and shed envy. A shed thred. Your 'which water' thread may only cause you to make another boat....

Typical bloody Victorian
Actually, my fiance is Victorian, only she's a GOOD Victorian, she moved away when she was a kid
Richard
(for the foreign types on the board, us South Australians have been fighting with them Victorians for centuries ... even before they invented South Australia and Victoria)

Well, I'll take that as a definite 'maybe'.
Miserable though to think that I'm typical of anything really....

Well, perhaps we should consider a 'nest of boats' then. A beach boat that sits comfortably inside sixpence, and has your rowboat nestled inside of it. I mean, it's got to be better than a nest of Redbacks!

Eh??? there was water in it last weekend. was kicking myself I hadn't brought a kayak

That freshwater embassy is quite a hoo-hah, isn't it !!
Or are you referring to the Clayton Sailing Club, whose marina is about 50M away
from water...
Now that they've deepened the jetty & opened up a channel from ramp to the Goolwa
channel, Clayton is not too bad. Even better now that they've marked said channel.
I scooted around using Teal's shallow water ability for some time before finding it.
Time spent kissing limestone boulders & gouging jags out of the fibreglass sheathing
on the wings. (My next boat WILL have a swinging centreboard, no matter what is
shown on the plans!!!)
Paddled at Murray Bridge late last year. No probs at all. Put in at Sturt Reserve,
where they have the pedal Prix. Felt sorry for the houseboats that couldn't get out of
the marina opposite Long Island. It's a long way down to the water, but the reduced
water depth has vastly reduced competition for space on it. Especially from noisy
aggressive ski boats & their relatives.
Good kayak territory too, if you don't mind the smell. Dylan Winter might get all
nostalgic about mud, but not this little black duck !!
Ditto. On all counts. That's partly why Houdini is back on my menu. Ross's Phoenix,
First Mate & Periwinkle should be good there. So too Green Island Skiff (probably best
of the bunch for off-the-beach?). Now that RAID41 is dead (or in remission), that's my short-list.
This week anyway...
Westlakes & probably the Pat would be good PDR club/fleet racing. Which is fine,
if you have a PDR to race. And a succession of available weekends to do so.
Also good for rowing or paddling exercise around Delphin Island. Scenery doen't
change much, not much wild-life, but the water's usually reasonably clean and reliably
there!
Putting a small sail boat in at the Dotterel Drive reserve at the northern end gives you
the run of both sides of the island to sail around. For a challenge, drop mast & pass
under both bridges. Tried that last time I put Teal in there, but the howling southerly
defeated me. Steep ramp would make launching Sixpence easy too.
The boat ramps I've stood at are smelly & a bit muddy. The water is strongly tidal so
is usually reasonably clean. (Or was when I was crewing out of RSAYS) River proper
is probably Sixpence territory. The wrecks area is reputed to be good rowing /
canoeing area.
Richard, At least your short-list only has one boat on it.
Maybe I should just buy it off you so it can live half-finished under my back verandah
instead of half-finished in your shed !! Actually, there's probably some merit in
that idea too... Bother !! My short-list just got longer again.
cheers

Rob, I reckon your "-self-righting-8-berth-floating-home-small-enough-to-fit-in-the-
car-boot-that-costs-what's-left-at-the-end-of-the-month-and-not-a-penny-more-and-
goes-incredibly-fast-on-command-oh-and-it-must-be-drop-dead-gorgeous-to-look-at"
idea is much simpler & more efficient use of resources & space. Have you got plans for it ?
cheers

So AJ, are you interested in giving the Finnis (rowing/paddling) a go this weekend? Sat?

Gawd a bloke goes out to the shed for a couple of hours to build a canoe and you blokes have all but decided to paddle this weekend while I'm gone.....don't think I'll have it finished in time.
Re Clayton I got a note from SA water today to say they expect to start pumping 27.5 Gigs back into the Goolwa side and should be finished in 10-12 weeks. The note was a warning about the noise apparently there will be 12 dirty great diesels going flat chat 24/7.
Noise it should be enough to make the Pelicans fly North.

Be lucky if they can find 27.5GL of water in the lake to pump.
On the plus side, the next few weeks could be a good time to buy Clayton property at
the right price. Unless they use those super-dooper mufflers like are fitted to some of
the emergency gennys around the CBD & at the RAH. Nearly got to put your hand on
the exhaust to see if they're running. (or so I'm told)

In the early days of the South Australian Wooden Boat Association we used to have an early morning Sunday meet up down at the Port River to go canoeing or rowing. I really like it down round Torrens Island ... but almost any stretch of water is nice in the early morning!
Paddling and chatting and poking into corners to see what is there. Also poking around the small boat club is quite fun ... looking at the different boats and maybe you will see some dolphins (if they are so smart why don't they have jobs). The Yacht Squadron area has some nice wooden boats too.
I don't have the balsa canoe or a car any more so it is a bit more difficult!
