If interested, there are a heap of photos of it in the Oughtred builders group on Yahoo Groups.

    Cheers, Cameron.
Ah but, I bet you're not one of THEM!

You have every reason to be proud of that boat Cameron, and by the way, what paint and colour is the very dark blue? The other question I have is, what type of timber are the floor boards, they're not Huon Pine, are they?

I agree, the Puffin was a ripper. Very well done.

Is this the Bolger? I should have written them down as my grey matter can't retain this stuff any more. Apologies if I got it wrong.

    Hi Bruce

Yes, pretty sure by the colours that it is the Bruce Tyson boat, his boat certainly has that blue bottom paint. There are pictures of it on one of the Bolger Yahoo overload groups, maybe 2,3or 4?

He's done some very nice Bolger boats including a lobster boat, the Harbinger, a Spur II, a Chebacco , and even a Romp (among others). The Romp is for sale again up in Queensland now.

    Greg,

The paint is International Brightside single pack polyurethane. The blue sheer strake is "Royal Blue" and the rest of the hull is "Blue Glo" white.

There are 3 coats of Brightside over 2 coats Prekote primer over 2 coats Bote Cote epoxy. Paint was all brush applied but thinned out a fair bit and tipped off very gently. The finish almost looks sprayed but not quite. Lightly sanded 240 grit between coats.

Last I heard Brightside was being phased out and replaced wtih something else and they have changed all the colours. Not sure if there is a direct equivalent in the new product.

The varnish is Goldspar over Bote Cote epoxy with the non-yellowing hardener.

The floor boards are Celery Top Pine. It will darken up to a honey colour over time, but when new has very similar colouration to Huon Pine. I reckon Celery Top has more interesting grain pattern though and Huon Pine can be a bit plain to look at sometimes.

I used Celery Top for the stem, keelson, skeg, gunnels and centre case structure too. The transom and thwarts are King Billy Pine and I used Tasmanian Blackwood for the knees, quarter knees, breasthook and a few other bits and pieces. The plywood is all 6mm Gaboon and the spars Oregon.

    Cheers, Cameron.

    Default Celery Top Pine then

    Ah thanks Cameron,

Royal Blue it looks too! Thanks for all that info on the timbers. Yes, I wasn't sure that it was Huon Pine . . .but? You are very lucky down there to have ready access to such wonderful timbers. I was just listening to an old ABC radio series on a cassette in my car coming home from work on sailing Australians from the 80s and Ian Johnston was talking about building his Crowther tri Twiggy in Hobart. He said that he and a friend just went down to somewhere-or-other and pulled out a couple of Huon Pine logs from a creek that the Piners had left behind. Well, this was in 70s or 80s.

Home again, holiday not long enough, took heaps of pics, will sort & post a few over the next few days, came home to a pile of work.

Good to catch up with a few members down there.

I was staying with Peter, Still Smilin' & spent a bit of time hanging around his stand at the show.

    Met B.O.A.T. KevM & Ashore

Met up with even more of the members of the Wooden Boat Assoc Cairns club, there were 5 of the blokes (& their partners) who were at the last Tinaroo Raid at a get together at Pete's place Tuesday arvo/evening after the show.

Cliff, yes that is the one. Glad you liked it.

Miss Mouse is one of our daughter's pet names but had her permission to use it for the boat.

    Cheers, Cameron.

Hi Cameron, the Puffin looks fantastic. One day I would love to see it in person (maybe 2013 ). If my Auk turns out half as good I will be a happy old fart too.

Re international bright side I have been using it on the motor sailer "Wavedancer" for about 9 years and I am very happy with it and have started painting the Auk with it. The Brightside is being replaced with "Toplac" and I have found that the royal blue (boot topping) and light? blue (Coach house) are very similar to the old brightside. I am not sure what the final colour of the Auk will be but how many cans of paint can you fit in a paint locker.
How do I find the yahoo group thingy?

Thanks Ian, that's good new about the Toplac colours. I have got 3 boats now all painted in various Brightside colours and didn't want to change colour schemes too much when it comes to repaint time.

If you go to Yahoo! Groups - Join or create groups, clubs, forums & communities and do a search on Oughtred you will find the group but you will have to register to post anything. It is Oughtred specific and lots of good info and pics available. However, there are plenty of knowledgable and friendly people right here too!

Given the interest I might start a new thread in here and share more info on "Miss Mouse". How do I attach pictures in this forum?

    Cheers, Cameron.

    Hi Rob

Yes I had a good look at the TACOMA.

I did not go on board, as the people appeared busy with something at the time I was there.
Beautiful shape boat and very well restored.

When you are replying or generating a new post, look down below the window that you type in.
You will find a button marked "Manage Attachments"
Have a play with that, you'll soon work it out.

I had a good look over it when it was moored in Hobart near the Living Boat Trust stand. It followed along with the Tawe Nunnagah from Cockle Creek.
The small boat shown along side was rowed/sailed all the way to Hobart.

That sounds a lot of work , but I'd probably have done it myself , 30-40 years ago.
I was talking to people today about the Tecoma , and a bloke was telling me about the monster engine , a name he couldn't pronounce Gr- Gre , and then it all clicked in , a Grenaa ! , yes , maximum revs 500 , cruises at 350 revs.
I know the mechanic who was flown out from Denmark , to supervise its restoration !.
He asked a while back if I had heard of her , and I hadn't , at that time.
I'll e-mail him tonight , to let him know the boat , and its engine , are going well.
    .
    Regards Rob J.
