Call it a hunch, but I don't think the Blue Marlin is temporarily absent 4 x square-rigged masts.

I'm sure jurisdictions other than 19th century British Admiralty will have definitions for ship" which make sense, but would they be as much fun ?
    cheers

I would have liked to have seen the operation of loading the "Cole".

I assume the salvage vessel is partially sunk under the vessel needing assistance, then the water is pumped out of the salvage vessel. Similar to a floating dry dock. ???

"laser Guided etc, Yardstick, is only a pipe dream. LOL.

According to the Admiralty Manual of Seaman Ship.

"Any vessel which could be put aboard a fully rigged ship".

A fully rigged ship, was then a 4 masted vessel.

    History is great.

there's a hole in your logic.

As the thing supporting the USS Cole lacks 4 x square-rigged masts,
    My Dear A.J.
It doesn't mention 4 square rigged masts , just 4 masts and the Ship carrying the Cole does in fact have 4 masts
    Radio mast
    Radar mast
    For Mast and the
    Aft Mast ,
There is probably a sat nav mast and a Suez mast
So it is a ship and the cole , while being carried is still a ship , because it is well known that the only time a boat isn't a ship is when it's afloat, and it clearly isn't

Your spot on paul , you sink the carrier , float the vessel to be carried over it and as you raise it you pump ballast from both vessels .
These carriers are widely used to transport dredges and oil rigs

    Thanks ASHORE.

I was only guessing, but it seemed to be the only explanation that made sense.
