Well if we're talking National Shame, I'll try to find my footage of William of Normandy sailing over to Blighty to knock off a few Saxons. Quality isn't good, and there are no sub-titles...

Give me Liberty or give me....
Australia II !
It was amazing after all those years of struggle: Gretel; Dame Pattie; Gretel II; Southern Cross; Kookaburra; Australia; and then Lexen remembered what he'd put on the bottom of the centreboard of Taipan in 1959!
Did I miss any?

Winged keel
Who knows, but still, something worked that year which hadn't in the past, even when the Australian boat may have been considered the faster boat, such as Gretel & Gretel II.
But that keel as an idea was brilliant and actually not new. Ben Miller (Lexen) had the same concept on his radical 18ft'er Taipan, of 1959. Here's a picture of the rudder and Centreboard of Taipan on the wall next to the boat at the Wharf 7 display at the National Maritime Museum/Sydney Heritage Fleet at Darling Harbour:

I like anything with sails, if it's old and wood all the better

When I have time next week I'll have another crack at finding a place that can convert video to DVD.
I have a clip of me taking Beth out on a camping trip from Hindmarsh island to meet up with others at Clayton. It was about 30 or maybe 40 knots. You can see the cameraman leeeeeaaaaan as the gusts hit ... and he is just filming me launch the thing. Most of the film BETH is a speck in the distance and I did not do a lot of sailing .... but the clip is a hoot.
I was so stupid to go.
I still would of course!
