Pioneer Steve
Thanks for that Steve
1837 makes you real South Australian pioneer stock!
My family arrived in Adelaide in 1854, too late to be considered as pioneers they say. But like your family, too early for the City of Adelaide.

I must say, not being a native of SA, that when I first heard of this project, I agreed with Mr fxst.
Having learnt a bit more of her history, I'm inclined to be somewhat more kindly disposed towards the project.
Did it strike anyone else watching the video of her being coaxed past the bridge,
that CoA is only a very little bit bigger than the tug ?

Sorry if you thought I was having a go at you Ticky I was not. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this and I totally agree re the oval development and bridge money wasted. They destroyed a really nice oval just so sports fanatics can watch sport.
Just for general info until I became less well I was a mad keen sailor and boat lover, restorer and building the odd one. Just so you don't think I was a landlubber that didn't like boats
That's it from me on this thread

Onlt a couple of days before farewell at Greenwich
There's a new post on the Save the City of Adelaide site regarding the move of the ship from Chatham Docks up the Thames to Greenwich for the farewell ceremony on the 18th October:

and here is an extract from todays Advertiser which highlight my objection to the purchase of this ship.
'The Adelaide group beat a group of Sunderland enthusiasts in a competition to secure the vessel in 2010.
For years, it lay rotting on a slipway at the Scottish Maritime Museum after it sank in 1991, with the cost of repairs put in excess of £10m, the BBC report said.
The City of Adelaide - also known as The Carrick - was built in Sunderland in 1864.

Funny though that now its due to head here the locals now want to stop it leaving even though it was rotting for 10 years before the Aussie crowd decided to waste money on it. My concern has been and will be that the hulk will now rot over here due to lack of cash to repair and maintain her. Still with an election coming up here I guess promises will be made though I hope not. Still I guess cheaper than a $40million footbridge . SA destroyed an oval that was regarded by millions of cricket fans world wide for its old world charm and heritage but now they revere an expensive hulk. I just don't get it. Oh and btw I don't follow sport just wanted to show the weirdness that happens here

This ship needs to be restored by somebody, the historicial value is far too great to just let it rot away. It can, & should be repaired & why not here in Sunny SA.
Pete, I know we disagree on this project, but we both agree that the use of public money, OUR MONEY, is wasted on things like the foot bridge at Adelaide oval.
I think, as normal people, we hear a figure like $10million, & we are gobsmacked. This is the kind of money that the average Joe Blow can only dream about. I used to dream of being a millionaire, like most do at some stage in thier lives.... Ah, to be that rich. To never have to worry about money again....
Well, If I was to add up everything we own, House, couple of cars, Caravan etc., I recon I would go pretty close to being 1/2 a millionaire, & I still feel like I haven't got 2 bob to rub together. We still live week to week, still have to be carefull with our money and I still cant come up with about $500 to buy the lathe I want. The point is, $1,000,000 is bugger all these days.
Australia spent 5.4 BILLION dollars on Foreign Aid in 2012. If we can spend that much on others, surely we can find a couple million to throw at a project that could train apprentices, envoke community spirit, possibly create some employment in the timber industry & spending withing the local marine & manufacturing industries, as well as preserve a piece of history. IMO, it really is less important how significant this particular ship is to south Australia than it is to show future generations, how things were back in the day.
Mate, I respect your views, But I recon if you want to make noise about government money wasting, there are plenty of other areas we could look at first.
Think about the people in NSW that have recently lost their houses & everything in them. What is the one thing they are usually most upset about?...
Their photos! Their history & memories. the things that can never be replaced no matter how much money you throw at it. photos of the kids when they were babies, or their first sporting trophy. And what are the things that people will grab when they have 30 seconds to get out of the house & drive for safety?.... Chances are it's a photo. I piece of history.
In the same situation Pete, What do you think you would grab as you were running out the door?
Here, we have a chance to not only save a photo, but to save that piece of history. To have it tied up along side the wharf at Pt Adelaide. To go on board & see how 2 -300 people at a time spent 6 weeks of their lives just to come to South Australia & start what we have today.
Thats gota be worth a couple mill doesn't it?

Well its on its way now so we are stuck with it regardless. I hope that it won't end up rotting here after the usual carry on about how nice to have some of history back. Just like the Sunderland crowd tried a last minute attempt to stop it even though it was rotting away on their shore and nobody cared until it went. I hope your faith in this is not misplaced and it really gets done. I would however refrain from too much optimism until after the state election as until then they will promise the world. oops sorry they are already starting to spend what we don't have so unless we have a committed group it will be doomed.
good luck and well argued

I might see if I can get involved with this project when it arrives, It would be a very interesting project.
My Uncle is a Boat Builder and did most of the work on the Hull of MV Marion. She had been sitting on the bottom in shallow water for about 20 or so years & was in a pretty bad state of repair. I'm not sure, but I think the Rot had a bit of Wood in it. All it needed was New Ribs & New Blanks. (It reminds me of my Brothers axe,... It's only had 5 new handles & 3 new heads and it's still just like a new axe.)
Sadly, I never inherited or learned any of his skills, but I am a Boilermaker by Trade & a cabinet maker by Hobby, and it will be all of 10min down the road from my house, so I'm sure they can find something for me to do.

Not saying its's wrong or right!!!!!
Side Note...
I'm not saying it's wrong or right, I'm just mentioning that Australia pledged $10mill of forign aid to the current crisis.
I make this point only to say that the little bit of public money set aside for this project is indeed, pocket change.

Rot with wood
Fantastic that you could be involved and that the site will be so close to you, Steve. All those iron frames will need quite a bit of work so your skills will come in very handy I'd guess, in any case.
From the Save the City of Adelaide web site it seems that the initial intention is to preserve the hulk as is and work on it as resources become available, it seems they are wanting to limit their ambitions for restoration until they know what is possible. That all seems very realistic and sensible I guess. But who knows, the publicity is building and people know about the ship so we may all be very pleasantly surprised by the building momentum!
