    Default Clipper, City of Adelaide

There is now some more dramatic progress with the preparation required to move the clipper City of Adelaide now that the Dutch salvers Hebo Maritime Services have been contracted to jack up the ship and move it on to a barge for transport to the port for its eventual transfer to Adelaide. Great video on Vimeo by Hebo:

OK......this might not be too PC but couldn't resist adding this story from the Sunderland Echo:

    150-year-old shipbuilder

    Makes you wonder...................

Default City of Adelaide on the move

On the wireless this morning was an interview with a reporter in the UK who said that the removalists have cradled & shifted CoA.
Has been moved further from the water so that the hole they dug to insert the cradle & heavy lift tractors can be filled in & levelled.
Should be moved down to the water & onto a barge in the next 24 hrs or so. That's the theory, anyway.

Default City of Adelaide "afloat" at last

The City of Adelaide has been loaded onto a barge and has passed through the opening bridge across the Irvine River. The tug Dutch Pioneer will take the barge to England within a few days where the City of Adelaide will be displayed close to the Cutty Sark for a period before the clipper is shipped to SA.

    Irvine Bridge Traversed - 9 September 2013

    News Alert - Irvine Departure - 16 or 17 September 2013

Although, all is not won quite yet, as the Sunderland group are still trying to stop the ship's transfer to SA:

I just think this is just another waste of money that we can do without. Health is underfunded but hey lets bring an old hulk to Adelaide and waste $$$millions on it to show how good we are

    Can't agree there, mate...

There are many areas where public money is wasted & it is true that the budget for health is way too low, but preserving history is not a waste of money. I am only guessing, but I'll bet most of the work will be done by Volunteers anyway. It is probably a lot cheaper that the last few rounds of politicians wage rises, & I am sure that it would be cheaper than the overseas aid budget for just 1 year. Why not spend a little public money on the interests of Australians for a change.

I'm all for a stop to wasting our hard earned mate, but I think there are a lot of areas that can be looked at before we start closing museums.

Sure would have been nice to see a Tassie Tiger...

Sorry but I disagree. It was never an Aussie ship it was built in Scotland and travelled here a few times with passengers. Many ships did this and probably still do. Should we also include them? Sorry its just a waste of money even if volunteers do the actual work who is going to put the $$million or so in ??? yep most likely the taxpayer. The museum wants it good for them but let them find the money. As for closing museums who said anything about that other than you? Lets keep the emotional BS out of this.

I think you'll find the amount of cash outlay for a project like this, is pocket change in the big picture of municipality budgetary requirements. In most cases a bond (a bond measure) is issued for the project and funding secured. On these types of projects lots of inventive revenue raising efforts can take place. These securities can be manipulated, moved around and sold. Often matching funds are offered if certain revenue goals are reached, etc. The tax breaks to bond holders is usually enough to warrant their purchase, assuming reasonable fiscal responsibility of the municipality is a routine thing.

As to the city's desire to have this old queen, well there seems some interest to say the least and it would be an attraction, though typically not one that's a big revenue maker, without considerable provenance. In fact, these types of ventures need to be run carefully or you could end up with a huge white elephant to feed.

Personally, I'd like to see the last remaining vessels of this era saved, but there's simply not enough interest, so saving as few as we can afford, seems the right thing to do.

Mate, the only one bringing any emotional al BS into this is you.

You have your opinion, & I believe it is a valid & noteworthy opinion. I just happen to disagree with you. No need to start slagging off mate, this is a forum.

Yes, I think these old ships should be preserved. I would rather see tax payer money spent on this project rather than on the upgrade of a football oval. Why not let the AFL pay for that. But there will be a lot more people who disagree with me on that point as well.

$1 Million to me is a huge, & maybe to you as well, but as PAR said, this is pocket change. It's probably about 100m or relaid road & a couple new footpaths. It's 1 very cheap missile in the defence budget, or 2 & a bit very modest houses here in Adelaide.

How do we explain these history making ships to the kids of the future, if there are none to show them. I am not suggesting this particular ship did anything of great note, but these old sailing ships discovered the world when the people at the time were freightened of falling off the edge. That History needs to be preserved. And as for the Museum buying it, They probably are, but who do you think owns the Adelaide museum? So in actual fact mate, if you don't recon the museums should get any public money, then you are suggesting we close them down. But, when I said that in my previous post, I was just trying to make what I thought, would be taken as point to enhance my opinion, & was not meant literaly.

Default Clipper, City of Adelaide significance

    Hello all,

Good to see that the ship is creating some discussion, anyway! But maybe the significance of the ship to SA needs to be kept in mind, here is a quote from the web site of the Save the City of Adelaide organisation:

"For 23 years the City of Adelaide brought large numbers of British and German migrants to the fledgling colony of South Australia. It is calculated that today approximately a quarter of a million South Australians, or one in five, can trace an ancestor that migrated, or was a passenger, on the City of Adelaide
    ."

So, the ship travelled to SA more than a few times. It was actually built in Sunderland in England but had been in Scotland for many years until just a few days ago.

This ship is significant historically in world terms but it is particularly significant to South Australia, there'll always be differences of opinion on issues like this but rather than worry about the tax payer in Australia maybe we should be thankful to the Scottish tax payers because Scotland has contributed to this project apparently.

Thanks for that exta info Greg, I was unaware of that.

I might try & find out if my ancestors were on her. I Know that on my mums side, there were 3 Geman brothers that jumped ship & settled in the Barrossa Valley, & on My dads side, Captain William Randell, The builder of the first paddle steamer on the Murray River, migrated out from england in 1837, but I don't know what ship either side came out on.

This is a link to another significant history saving project in South Australia.:
